Question OK why the hell did Ford get rid of the pocket under the column?

and does anyone know if an older trim piece from a 99 would fit a 01? Anyone tried it? That pocket would be perfect for my cell phone while it charges.

Any input?

Thanks

love that pocket

I have no idea why they got rid of it on the newer models. I didn't know they did. Love that pocket, perfect place for hiding my wallet, empty of course, kids take care of that.

Never thought of putting a cell phone in there!

That was my first gripe with my L, I loved that thing.

Though I know why they got rid of it, boost caused things to fly all over the place.

Couldn't you just buy the '99 part and put it on an '01?

Sounds useful - does anyone have a photo?

THAT was the thing that I missed MOST off the 99. Don't remember where but I read that John Colletti replied that they could save almost .25 cents by eliminating the "cubby hole"

I agree, I had that pocket in my 98 and it was great for sunglasses, wallet, or cell phone. I'm not sure if you could swap out those dash pieces or not, that'd be a heck of a big piece because you couldn't get just the pocket, but that whole chunk of the dashboard... a little too much work for me just ot have a convenient pocket .

The cost savings per unit was closer to .67 cents, apparently John C. got bad data. The cubby consisted of the dash cover 'hole' and the 'drawer' that was behind the hole. It was the drawer that was eliminated and resulted in the cost savings. Which in turn made the hole in dash cover unnecessary. So, if you want to retro-fit you'll need both parts.

Ford, acknowledged that they made a mistake. They received many more complaints about the missing cubby than the 67 cents was worth. They said they 'learned a lesson' not to 'downgrade' without a benefit other than a few cents.

Ford didn't learn jack***** by that mistake. Otherwise they could have returned to it in '01. These guys are so bean counter driven, it's scary. Check out the cup holder as another fine example. The pre '00 design was way cool, with the slide out ashtray. Now you have a choice. Cup or ashtray. Bogus!!

LoL, that sunglasses holder SUX! It tilts backwards when closed which results in your precious cargo being bounced all around.

Why was this? Was it cause the front end was lowered 2+ inches? Idiots they are!

Another use for the 'sun glasses holder'--I keep my StarTec cell phone there. Stays secure and quick & easy to get to.

I just installed a remote starter, I noticed when I took the trim off from under the wheel that there is a heavy cage like structure right under the steering wheel. I don't think that the old pocket would fit with this structural change...just a guess.
