I just got my pinion seal replaced, again.
The 2001 owners manual suppliment says 80w-90 but the tag on the axle says 75w-140 which is what the dealer put in.

Which one is correct?

I noticed that my pinion seal is leaking slightly. Did you take it to the dealer?

I put in 75-140 the first time (very expensive) then bfb said read the manual...I did, called SVT and used the mobil one 75-90. It runs great.

Thanks, I don't think the guys at SVT know what it should use. If I have to change it again I am going to put some Amsoil in it.

 

I called and told them that the diff says only 75-140. They kept on telling me that it was supposed to be 80-90w only and to look in the owners manual. I don't believe the maker of our rearends tagged them and then proceded to fill them with another fluid.

I think the 75-90 will work just fine, besides it is only $6 per quart instead of $20, which is good when I'm using 5-6 quarts of fluid.

 

Since the rebuild of my rear, I have been using REDLINE "lighweight SHOCKPROOF GEAR OIL" It's the one with a blue label, and no numbers on the bottle. I used this with no friction modifier for close to 5-6K, and not one problem with it. The cost was under 10 bucks a bottle.

 

I think our suplimental manual has a misprint in it regarding the gear lube. I am going by what the tag on the axle cover says. If it blows up it will be the dealers fault.

 

Either way it should be dealer fault. I have the second printing 2001 supplement and it also says 80-90w...nothing about synthetic. Could Ford have made a ******* don't even say it.

Thanks for the picture. If SVT made that mistake in our manual, I wonder what other mistakes we might be able to find.
