How are you receiving the credit card number? It sure looks like that is a standard formmail.cgi script that will send info entered to your email address. The server is throwing up a secure web page, but then it turns around and sends the name, credit card number, etc as plain text to your email box, which is about as unsecure transmission as you can get.

This was something my ISP set up for me. What I have been told is that the page has been set up on a secured system on their side, they in return send back to me.

But to make double sure, I will e-mail them your response and have them get back to me with their reply.

I will then post their note on this thread and you can take a look and then let me know.

Thanks for the note. I want to make sure all is OK.

How are you? My wife and purchased a new home a few months ago and she has had me going many, many, many thanks around the house like grass, plants, painting, tile, carpets, etc., etc. The work has been endless. We are done and now I can go back to play.

If you want the new stock color, wait for a week or so. I have ordered a number of the new mats and I am waiting for a re-ply back as to what everyone thinks of the new color.

I sent your note to my ISP. They have already sent an acknoledgement that they will get back. I think it was an automatic response.

Jim,

There is a security problem is only if you receive the CC numbers via email.

You might be ok if:
- The email account is with the same ISP that hosts the script.
- And if their network is smart enough to send email from their HTTP server to their mail server without going outside their internal network.
- And you connect directly to their network to get the email (dialup or dsl/cable). And don't use something like Hotmail to access the account.

But with some ISP's, when you receive messages it may still be routed back to the internet to get from one mail server to the one you happen to be connected to at the time. Whether these transactions are encrypted or not, I don't know.

The easiest simple way to securely handle CC numbers is to have the ISP store the info, then send you a message that you have received an order, then direct you to a secure page where you can view it via HTTPS. That way the numbers are never transmitted unencrypted.

Check out Mal's ecommerce site. I used this a while back to build a site for a non-profit. Simple to set up and free, but you do need to know some basic HTML.

BTW, got my mats in the original order, and about 20k miles later they are holding up very well. Be sure to post something before you end this deal, I may want to order another set in case these ones ever wear out.

My ISP just E-mailed me regarding the concern

SSL encrypts the data between the users computer and the server. Once the form is complete, the data is indeed e-mailed to you however since the e-mail goes to the same physical box, there is no way that a snoooper can hijack the information.

Back to you. I almost got tired a few months ago and said to heck with this mat thing. After a few months off and knowing the mat company would not take any orders with me sending them, I gave in and now back to it for the board members

Thanks for your original note. Since I am not a computer wiz, I took it for granted that all was OK but your note made me look in to it to make sure it was.

Now that I have, I understand a little bit more what is happening between the ISP and my computer and now I feel comfortable that L owners' info. is safe.

Thanks

Jim
