22" rims with 305/45 tires

Hi,

I know this is not directly Lightning related, but someone suggested that I post this here so here it goes. I am in the process of purchasing some 22" rims and 305/45 tires. I have a 98 Expedition. I just wanted to know if I am going to run into any problems such as rubbing or anything else. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Wink

drcarrillo,
I have 22x10 KMC bofa's with Dunlop SP 9000's with a 285/30/22 series and it works great for me. I would say that the 305/45/22's would be fine as long as you haven't slamed the Expedition. Don't quate me on it though. The size that I went with will work for sure though.

Thanks for the reply hdmlnium.

However, I don't want to go with 35 series tires such as yourself. I would actually be scared of putting such a tire on a daily-driven Expedition. They do look great though! Also, do you think the 305 series tires would stick out of the fender wells or would they just be flush? I have 285/60-18 size tires on right now and they are well within the fender so I am thinking that 305 tires will pretty much be even with the fenders. Any opinion? Thanks again.

Thumbs up

drcarrillo,
If you are running 285/60/18's now than you should be ok with the upgrade.
Your current tire Diameter is 31.46in. with a sidewall of 6.73in.
The 305/45/22's have a diameter of 32.80in. with a side wall of 5.40in.
I think it would be a great choice and they seem to me like they would fit great.
Oh and I have 30 series not 35, which would make it even worse for you but they handle great, no side wall flex on these bad boys.

Thanks for all the help hdmlnium!

Sorry I didn't notice that you were running 30 series tires!! I think I am going to go with some Toyo 305/45-22 tires. The rims I am getting are the Driv Plaques. I will post pictures as soon as I get them. Again, thanks for the prompt responses and all the help.

Thumbs up Driv Plagues

Those are one of my favorite wheels but the 3k + price for them was out of my range! But I'm glad I steered you in the right direction drcarrillo.

I forgot to thank you for sending me over to the Lightning forum 99flareside. Thus....thank you!! I got a great deal on the 22" Driv Plaques and tires and that is the reason I am purchasing them. I was thinking of going with 20" rims, but when I got this deal I thought I would go for it. I am picking up the tires today and the rims on Monday. However, I probably won't be able to get them mounted until next weekend so I will try to post pics then. Again, thanks for all the help guys.

I finally got the 22" Driv Plaques and the 305/45-22 Toyos on! They look much better than I expected them to. Also with regard to the rubbing issue: there is none, even though my Expedition is lowered about an inch and a half. Thanks for all the help and I will post pics as soon as I can.

Regards,
Robert

Cool

drcarillo,

This is a tire comparison between a stock Lightning tire and what you are proposing to use. I would hate to see you spend that kind of money on tires and not be able to use them. I am concerned that a tire almost 4.5 '' in diameter over the stock Lightning tire (not to mention wider) might rub during severe steering.

Tire Size Comparison

Specs Sidewall Radius Dia Circum Revs/Mile Dif.
295/45-18 5.2in 14.2in 28.5in 89.4in 709 0.0%
305/45-22 5.4in 16.4in 32.8in 103.1in 615 15.3%
