JL: Any updates on the bed-mounted Powercooler?

JL- I remember a month or so ago you had mentioned that you were in the process of developing a new rear (bed) mounted Powercooler that did not require relocating the battery (something I personally didn't want to tangle with). Do you have any more info about it (i.e. pricing, availability, capacity vs. original JL Powercooler, mounting with bedrug/bedliner etc)?

I would have emailed you, but I figured that there are plenty of others here that are interested too.

Thanks. Later...

GK

I for one would also be interested in something like this, but I have a few questions.

1. For either the rear mounted battery or the bed mounted powercooler, would you have to drill holes in the bed of the truck? I don't really want to go cutting my truck up.

2. If you mount the battery in (or I believe some folks have done UNDER the bed, are you required to have a battery disconnect switch?

3. If you mount the power cooler in the bed, then how do you drain it? I have seen the folks at the dragstrip with the engine mounted ones just pull a plug or unscrew a pet**** and drain the cooler, if it's in the bed, where do you drain? more holes in the truck for a drain hose?

thanks,
chris haynie

MXRacer,

I did E-mail JL, and he said that he was still working on it. He may have an "official" answer for the board though.

My thoughts on mounting the Powercooler in the bed...

Hopefully there will be a way to attach it to the cargo tie-down brackets, although the brackets may have to be changed out on the '01 since they're different and would be hard to attach to.

I would think also that the plugs at the front of the bed would have to be removed to route the hoses through going up to the engine compartment. Maybe there will be a way to run a drain though this hole also.

Just my little bit of input

Any time you move the battery from the stock location to another location not under the hood, You need a switch like this.

Hey the batteries in the back are awesome for hooking up at the track.

Nice! But....

I love the rear mount battery set-up along w/ the cut-off and remote jump layout!
But, on another note, the rear of our cabs are butt-ugly w/o a bed to "hide" it!

I called JL today, they said that they should have had the bed mount powercooler kits like a month ago, but there have been some delays with guy welding the tubing inside.

The bed mounted kits will be TWICE the size of the underhood powercooler resevoir. I'd really rather not deal with relocating the battery, and the added size of the bed powercooler reinforces my plans.

later,
chris

JL: I definitely like the idea of having twice the capacity, but I'm still curious as to how it will mount(?). Are you planning to locate it at the front of the bed against the cab, or at the rear of the bed? I hadn't thought of it before, but how will the plumbing be run (inlet and outlet lines, drain etc)? Will any drilling of the bed be required, or are there existing holes somewhere in the bed from the factory (I've had a bedliner since Day 1, so I really don't know what the bed looks like).

Uhhmmmm- yeah, thats all I can think of right now. Thanks. Later...

a very interested GK

Well kinda, I went into the dealer to have them check out the door crack and they said that they where going to replace my spare with a new goodyear and get rid of the firestone. Well needless to say they kinda looked at me funny and said what the hell is this thing down here.

No that didn't happen but it would have been funny if it did, .

I like having the batteries back there though. "A$$ dragging racing" Right sprio!
