Unhappy belt slipping?

first off I did a search but not sure if this is the problem or not. I have been doing some "top speed runs" on the way home from work the last few days and have noticed that when I mash the go pedal from around 65-70 mph and let it run up 130-135 I get a STRONG burning rubber type smell, and I'm only getting 10psi on the autometer gauge(use to see 12-13psi) could this be the belt slipping or maybe the tensioner going bad? During short "stoplight" runs I still only get 10psi but cannot smell the burning rubber. I have had this happen 3 different times now. any input is welcome. thanks Shawn

Replace your belt and see if it still does it. They should have them in stock at the dealer or you can go to NAPA or local parts store and get the best Gates belt they have.

Shawn,

What kind of mileage are we talking about with this current belt? If it's over 15-20 K, I would replace it, but thats just me.

At high RPM's our belts will actually tighten slightly, but could still slip some what. Check the tensioner as well, there may be a problem there. Hope this helps.

Not quite sure on how you could properly check the tensioner. Maybe Sal could give us some input on that.

With the stock upper, and the PSP lower blower pulley on my truck, I ran the stock belt, which was a little tighter installing after the new pulley. Some (handful) had problems with the stock belt being too tight, and installed a slightly longer belt.
Without seeing the truck first hand, I would do a belt, and go from there.

My belt slips a bit too

My belt is slipping after I snap the throttle shut when I quit doing a burn out. It's also sqreached a little when I do a 0-30 MPH run and drop out of it quickly. I quess it's just the blower is going to "no load" all of a sudden when the bypass opens. No loss of boost though.

The past two mornings I have had a belt noise at start up but would go away after a min or two. I have had a rubber smell at high speeds also. Could this be my belt slipping? How frequently are you suppose to change out the belt?

Thanks
Damon

I don't hear any screaching just smell burning rubber and only when I stand on the throttle and run thru a few gears. I ordered a new belt yesterday and should be in today I'll change that and see if It helps any. thanks for all the info.

I don't know what others will think however on my mustang W/ an S trim Vortech the belt would slip in the high RPM's thus polishing the pullies! So I removed the pullies and glass beated the area that the belt contacts. This worked awsome. Hope it helps BL

Question One of the two belts is slipping!

My Lightning has had a belt screech since the first episode of WOT. At the top end of "TO THE FLOOR" shifts: 1st to 2nd and also shifting into drive, there is a quite audible SCREECH I'm almost sure the blower belt is the culprit! however, there is no lossof boost and the engine runs just fine. Something that I've tried is: Pulling a vacuum on the by-pass valve and doing several WOT runs. Doing this absolutley eliminates the noise.
These engines certainly have a significant power loss w/o any actuated boost! Runs about like a normaly asperated 4.6

I had the belt replaced, but the slippage or sound of slippage continues to happen. When I purchase that there PSP lower pulley, I really expect the alledged blower belt screech to stop.

Sorry for the lenthy post reply, but i wanted to share this with you all.

Spike

Me too...

I got the same thing with mine. At first I thought it was something in the tranny then the more I drove and listened... I realized it's the blower belt slipping when the truck hits 2nd or 3rd. Under WOT I don't hear it because the shifts aren't as firm as with moderate acceleration.

Hopefully this will go away when I change the lower pulley

If you hear a belt squeeling during shifts, it's sometime the accessories serpentine belt. My Z28 used to do it stock even before the blower.

update.....

I changed the blower belt Fri afternoon..... Belt is STILL slipping, still can't hear it but can smell it!!!! and still only at 10psi. went to the track Sat and made 2 passes with the belt slipping, went 8.49 (1/8) someone in the pits suggested that I spray some VHT traction compound on the belt, after I did this the very next run was 8.37 with NO rubber smell AND 12psi reading on the autometer gauge!!! now I defentily know that it is the belt but how can I fix it? I don't want to continually have to spray traction compound on the belt (it makes a mess of the engine compartment) any thoughs?
