Angry Steering problems......

I just noticed a strange noise coming from the steering today. What happened was I got out of the truck while it was parked in the driveway, and I bumped the steering wheel a bit - thus the pop noise. I shut the truck off and then turned the key forward so that I could steer a bit back and forth, and the noise got very loud. It seems to be a popping noise coming from either a bad ball joint, or something inside the steering box. Anyone else ever have this? Any opinions on what may be wrong??? The truck has seemed to be a bit looser in the front lately... hopefully this isn't a safety concern. Thanks guys.

Do a search under 'clunk'. Mine made the noise you describe. Ford put in washers with cleats on the lower control arm bolts. It's been about 60,000 miles since and the noise has started again. Someone here (Herb?) sells special washers you can install to more positively locate the control arms. Ford's fix doesn't hold up it seems.
