Dont get mad: Reasons to buy a regular cab pickup
It sounds to me like you are in the same position I was in 2 years ago. It was the middle of my Sophomore year at A&M and I was thinking I needed to replace my aging Bronco. By some random chance, my parents had some extra money and wanted to do something nice for me, so they decided to buy me the new vehicle I needed. They were expecting me to buy and SUV, so I was hesitant to even bring up the idea of me purchasing a 2000 Lightning. When I brought up the subject, they kind of dismissed it as something that would pass in time. My brother, however, took it upon himself to give me the *** chewing of all *** chewings telling me why I should buy a Yukon above not only a Lightning, but a Ford. That kind of lit a fire under my *** so I started doing some research (and came across this board, coincidently) into the matter.
I, too, was worried about cargo space because the vehicle I was driving as the time was a Bronco and it had more room and space for 3 more people. Of course, that meant that I was always the one to drive when we went out and was usually the first one called when someone needed something moved. I was tired of being "that guy" and sat down and made an honest list of the pros and cons of owning a Lightning. Think about things like: "Yeah, there are only two seats, but how many hours a week is someone else actually riding with me?" "If I spend ~$1500 extra and go with a BedRug and SnugTop, how much extra space will I gain or lose?" "What kind of activities will I have to give up, and what are some that I may gain by making this purchase?" (For me, I don't get to fish nearly as much as I used to, but I now get to race as often (or more often) than I used to fish). "What will my parking situation be like while I'm at school?" (Will you have a garage?, have to park in tight spots with others who may not care about your truck as much as you?, etc).
I don't know that it's an issue of being a single cab so much as it being a balance between overall practicality and personaly enjoyment. Yeah, there are less expensive vehicles out there that are a lot more versatile, but what will they do for you? Personally, my truck has given me the opportunity to meet some of the nicest people imaginable and has made the last few years a lot of fun.
Oh, and as far as the family situation went, they obviously saw how much owning an L meant to me and went through with the purchase. Now, my dad loves riding with me, enjoys helping me install mods, and even comes out to the track to watch me race every now and agian. My brother wound up selling his Yukon and buying an Expy. Now he realizes that it's too big for him and is looking for something smaller, like a SINGLE CAB TRUCK.
