Engine knocking noise after 1st oil change update.

From previous post stated that at my first oil change (~1200 miles), the engine made those infamous diesel knocking sounds (for next 3 days at first morning startup). Later contacted SVT...told them about this and that the dealer has insisted on 6.5 qt fills with new filter....SVT said only 6.0 qt fills period....SVT was to send a memo to SVT dealers explaining that these engines REQUIRE 6.0 qts. and not 6.5. This morning had oil changed at ~2200 miles (6.0 qts. Castrol 5w20, factory filter plus charged the filter). First startup was with dead normal engine sounds....hmmnnnn....possibly the 6.5 prior fill (a borderline overfill according to SVT)caused (in my case) these unusual diesel type engine knocking sounds.....will watch it closely over the next few days....just passing along the info.

Oil change places will try to overfill your engine, too. Always check to make sure how much oil they are going to refill with, before they do it.

I agree with you BadDog,
In my case I knew exactly the amount they were putting in...
2 or 3 of the mechanics there insisted that 6.5 qts was the "proper" fill for the 5.4 engine...well...so much for ASSUMING that the dealer was up to speed on these engine specs.
Thanks for resonding.

did you charge the filter with oil from the 6 quarts or additional oil?

noise

Mine started the rattling noise after the first oil change. I only gave them 6 quarts. It was 5W-30, couldn't find any 5W-20. Mobil one. Would that be the reason for the noise?? Is it imperative that it be 5w20?? I've seen where other used 5w30 with no admitted problems.

djc cobra,

the oil filter was charged with a portion of the 6 qts...so the total oil fill is 6.0 qts period with a factory filter....this is what SVT recommends.

Another update......sunday morning and monday morning; first startup..... the "liquid rattling knocking" sound started..just as before when used 6.5 qts....So 6.0 qts or 6.5 qts does not affect these sounds....its the actual draining / changing of the oil itself.

DR.D,

SVT and the 2 local ford / mercury dealers here in Athens BOTH
are very stern about this 5w20 requirement.

Georgia,

I did the same thing. I drained the oil, charged and replaced filter and filled with 5w20 motocraft.

seemed a bit quieter, but the sound seems to have returned.

Georgia Moon:

If you'd just take thet L and straddle one a them ditches you got in Athens, then you could drain out thet nasty stuff and count them quarts as you pour it in. go ahead and git them overalls dirty!

(ok, ok, just kiddin'--from another son-of-the-South.)

LIGHTNINROD,

Well....
I have found the best way to change oil is in one of them special ditches that has budweiser and miller cans in it......it adds atmospehere to the whole experience...its a guy thing....I would do it on the front lawn but don't want to upset all the pink flamingos....funny thing is they never move or make noise.

djc cobra ,

Since the oil change last sat. each cold start up in the morning has the same "liquid rattling knocking" noise....I just dont understand what "exactly" is occuring.

i work at a ford dealer myself and another tech both have
2001 lightnings they both make noise cold the noise is from
the pistons they all do it it willnot cause a problem most
people don't notice they just start up and go if you
start up and as fast idle comes down listen close around
front wheel area engine will make marble type noise for
approx. 5min until pistons expand most performance engines
built with forged pistons are noisy just can't here it because
they have open or loud exhaust

Been a lurker for a loooong time -finally got my 01' L a couple of weeks ago. It's everything I'd hoped for!...

Then at 1200mi (yesterday) I changed the oil...and guess what? Knock knock knock...noticed this immediately -hoped it was just priming itself but, I don't think so. It seemed to go away very quickly -but, I could still barely hear it from outside the truck after it was warm. Why the heck would this happen after an oil change?

I used Castrol 5w30 and K&N gold

I didn't drive it today, wanted to read up on this site to see what everyone else had to say. I'm still just as confused though! Do I go get a motorcraft filter and 5w20 immediately before driving anywhere else.
I guess just listen closely for a change -I will NOT change the way I drive it! WOT every freakin' day till she blows.

Also, wanted to say Thanks to all the people on this board -it's a wealth of information!

Even when warm?

Mine knocks even after it's warm. Can't be right, and it's going in to be checked. Just waiting for the right time. Hell, I've only put a few hundred miles on it in the last few months. Ten bucks sez my dealer thinks it's normal.
