Chip Problems
I purchased the Superchip R9 Flipchip for a fellow '99 Lightning owner. He has 30K miles on his truck. I attempted to install it yesterday and ran into a problem and was wondering if anyone out here had some advice or similiar experience.
I have the R9 and everything is fine on my truck.
I removed the cpu, opened it up and peeled off the clear coating in order to have good contacts. Installed the chip and when we turned the key to the on position...something on the left side near the firewall started clicking repeatedly. Turned the key off and reworked the contacts several times. It almost seems like the fuel pump is not responding properly.?. Turned the truck over a few times even though the tapping/clicking noise was there and it would not fire. I took my cpu out and installed it in his truck and solved the clicking problem but still did not here the normal noise from the fuel pump coming on. Turned it over and no go. We wound up pulling the chip and leaving it off for now. I feel pretty confident that the chip is hitting the contact points on the cpu...especially after trying my cpu in his truck.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the contacts are good and clean, you need to check a few other things. If you put the chip in and the theft light flashes when you turn the key to run (it should stay solid) and/or the odomoter has dashes across it, they chip is not working. If either your truck or his had the PCM reflashed by the dealer, the chip will have to be reburned. Also, you can't just "swap" PCMs, they have to be configured to the truck, so that really doesn't tell you anything. Check the other stuff.
Sal,
The Theft Light flashes and the odometer has ------- across it. So you're saying that his PCM has been reflashed....right? I guess this is probably likely since he bought his used from a dealership with 25k miles already on it.

You can also get that kind of result if the connector is not properly cleaned, or if thee is a jumper misconfiguraiotn inside teh EUC, though to date there haven't been any Lightning ECU's with mis-configured jumpers, as we've seen a some other late 98 & early 99 FoMoCo's. Make sure that you removed both the top *and* the bottom covers for the ECU to clean that connector. It's also important to remove the coating not just from the contacts, but from the entire surface area of the connector covered by the Superchip when it's installed, so make sure to scrape the edges on both sides and the front, as well as in between each of the contacts thoroughly.
You can easily determine is the ECU has been reflashed, worst case you can drop by a dealership and they can scan the ECU for it's calibration code and tell you immediatley.
Also, though some neglect to do this, it is a requirement that a "Notice of Modification" sticker be placed under the hood in a prominent location if the ECU's software load has been changed, it's considered an emissions change. It's a white sticker that is usually about 2 inches high by 3 inches wide, and you can usually find it op top of the factory airbox, or on the upper radiator support, etc. Unfortunately, you're lucky if they get placed maybe 50% of the time, some dealerships *never* do it, and others are religious about placing those stickers 100% of the time, and everything in between.
Good luck!
