The 04 5.4 engine has had some problems with the VCT, variable cam timing. If you buy an 04, it may be best to buy one with a 4.6 or 4.2. The 5.4 in the 03 doesn't have VCT.

 

Being that this post is in the Lightning forum, I assume this person is asking about an 03 or 04 Lightning. The 04 Lightning is like the Heritage trucks, it's the same as an 03. It has a supercharged 5.4 2 valve which does not have VCT.

 

You'll probably want to watch out for modifications. Especially weird/hack-job modifications. That is sometimes a sign of something that isn't good. Mileage doesn't necessarily means it's a bad truck.

For stuff like this, I highly recommend paying a professional or two to examine the truck thoroughly.
