Question Clunk Fix- Opinions please

I've purchased a set of Herb's washers and understand the need for the cam bolt kits to properly align. My dealer refused to put on the aftermarket parts (washers). Can the washers be installed by the average joe at home and then take to the shop for alignment?

What's involved? (need lift, jack stands...)

Can anyone recommend a shop or help in the DFW area with my issue?

Thanks!

Check out my gallery linked below. You can do it yourself with a floor jack and a jackstand.

1. Loosen Lugnuts on left front wheel.
2. Jack the left side of the truck up.
3. Place jackstand under the frame.
4. Lower the truck onto the jackstand.
5. Remove left front wheel.
6. Loosen the A-Arm nut.
7. Use the floor jack to apply pressure to the A-Arm so as to relieve pressure on the A-Arm bolt.
8. Remove A-Arm bolt.
9. Install washers.
10. Repeat steps 8 to 1 in that order.

All there is to it.

Go ahead and buy a NAPA cam bolt kit also to have an alignment shop install. Approx $22.

Good luck.

Easy one to do, just follow the instructions above. Took me about an hour. However, found that the noise is more related to the steering stops. Just put some grease at the contact point on the stop and no more clunk. The stops are located on the lower suspension arm and are just a small steel nub, easy to spot from the rust that will be on them.

installing the washers is very easy providing you have access to the right tools. I have a lift and plenty of tools, so the whole process (installing the washers, not including the camber adjusters) took less than 10 minutes. just follow the directions the folks above gave, support the a-arm with a floor jack or something. tighten the bolts to 140ft/lbs (or just really tight). By the way, my 2001 had the clunk from day one, it also had already come from the factory with the ford fix star washers. I did the TSB anyway and installed new star washers and did the proper torque thing, this time though I washed the frame wax off with Brake-Clean first to prevent any slippage. Still did exactly the same noise. bought and installed herbs washers, that noise is gone, but now I hear the steering stop noise which is similar but only at or near the steering locks. Greased the stops and 98% of all that noise is gone. all in all, I'm pleased with the herb's. By the way, you probably could have just installed them yourself and taken the truck to the dealership for that alignment and they'd have never known the difference, once they are in they just look like some plain old washers.

later,
chris
