Question Question for a ford tech about IC leaking and recall

I've heard that ford is going to make the IC and blower setups ont he 99/00's a recall item in the future. So with that in mind, I was going to have them swap it out as soon as it becomes a recall. Now most of us on here with the 99's/00's would love to have this done, but I'm, worried that ford won't replace it onces they see my engine bay. Do they have to on a recall, or no. What if its just a TSB?

Basically if I go in there and they say NO, what do I do. try to fight it or just give up on it!

Killa,

I think if it's a recall they have to replace what's recalled, regardless of what you've done that might void your warranty I wouldn't want them looking under the hood in mine either...

I'm pretty sure that it doesn't matter the mileage in this case. Ford gives a time period (between x and y), and we have to schedule an appointment. At least that's how I understood this

Hey RTKILLA,
I believe that until we get letters from Ford, we won't know for certain. The letter I had printed off OASIS last Friday clearly states that this recall is being processed as a low volume program. I believe that means that Ford isn't going to be issuing a bunch of ICs to dealers to remedy the problem. Rather, once the owners recieve letters, owners must notify Ford's "Low Volume Recall Coordination Center". This center will then notify dealers " of the owners that chose (those) dealerships to perform the service..." Parts will be ordered for the dealers by the Program Coordination Center, then the dealers will notify owners to arrange for service.
The letter (Owner Notification Program #01B81) CLEARLY states that ICs will be replaced on ALL 99-00 Lightnings. The program terms state "This program will be in effect until September 30, 2002, regardless of mileage". The notice says nothing about inspections, etc... The reason for the program says that "intercoolers may fracture and create an internal coolant leak".
It would be useful to hear from someone experienced in low volume recalls, as my experience has been with massive recalls that affect large numbers of vehicles. Sorry for long post!

just for the hell of it I called up my dealer to check and see if they new about it yet and they said nothing as off this morning.

I now its kinda early since they said the 30th on NLOC, but what the hell.

They said the check back at the end of the week, and ohyeah.

Mods shouldn't affect anything.

only if the parts being replaced are non Ford OEM parts. So in other words, if you have a Kenne bell blower in place of your L blower, your SOL.

do they swap out blowers too? I just installed that damn upper pulley too! oh well.

I think they will fix it regardless of milage or mods.I just took mine in and they didn't even open the hood just said the parts would be ordered and it would be taken care of.

I had mine replaced a couple of months ago and they gave me a 80/20 warranty for being over 36K miles so i ended up paying $240 and some change. I was back at the dealer to get a head replacemed and when i went to pick the L up they said that the head would be covered under warranty and i was goign to get a refund for the money that i payed for the I/C fix. I have close to 44K miles on my L and they just decided to put it under regular warranty. I will no argue with that.

Talking

Brought mine in about a month ago and asked for the die test and they said they did not do those and if i thought it might be leaking, they would take my word for it[no bull] any ways about three weeks later they called and i had it done today with ram air, chip upper and lower pulleys, straight pipes ect and had no problems whatsoever. They installed XL3Z-9424-ab intake kit, spark plugs and 1F2Z17D532-CA cover and switch[whatever that is]. This took 2.2 hours and the code for the ic leak is L85 and part of the 01B81 program intercooler[the fix]. These guys are fast and 14 of the 34 mechanics drag race. One of them drove his 10 sec tubbed ranger to work today.

Post IC Replacement

Replaced my intercooler the other day, had it off in less than 45min. As far as I know the only thing getting replaced is the charge air cooler and upper intake, not the blower too.

Campaign 01B81

A campaign currently exists.....

Tell your dealer to look up 01B81. It's for 99/00 only.

Mileage is not an issue

Dealers must replace the supercharger's intercooler sub-assembly on all affected vehicles.

Good luck... I tried to get mine done, but it wasn't leaking so they didn't do it. I'm following up on that.
