Help! I need intercooler clarification
This is confusing. I have read the post here and on svtperformance.
Here is my question and it is a very important one.:
Does the intercooler have to be leaking already or will they install the new parts even if it has not leaked yet?

Sending out owner notifications about a replacement part. If yours is leaking you will call the number provided in the notice and tell them where to send the parts to get yours fixed. If you get a notice, make the call, it will be replaced.
of course the intercooler battle will never die and I have somemore stuff for the cause.
Why will they recall it if there is no safety concern?? I thought auto makers were only allowed to issue recalls if the safety of the vehicle is an issue and I think the intercooler is not a safety concern.
I took my truck in last Friday for a inspection and the wiper recall and I had all my mods on the truck and they didn't say a thing about them. BUT....I asked them about the fix for the intercoolers on '99 and '00 Lightnings and they had no idea what I was talking about. I don't even think they knew what a intercooler was more or less what the fix part # was, which I now have.
I will investigate the recall with my dealer and get back with you , and I will see if I can get anything in writing to post at a later date.

Ok guys, thanks for the replies. I look forward to hearing more about this.
If I can get my intercooler replaced before it pukes, that will make me feel a lot better about the whole situation and Ford in general. This is Ford's big chance to keep me as a Lightning customer. So far my experiences with Ford's recalls and TSB's on the 2000 L have not been good. I blame the dealership I was working with for most of that, but Ford is responsible for poor design decisions in the first place. I am willing to overlook all that BS if they do the right thing about the intercoolers on the 99 and 2000 L's. If they fix this one and treat me right, someday I will reward Ford by purchasing a 3rd or 4th generation L. I hope Ford is listening.

Well.... I was told about the campaign before it was officially released. I waited for the offical release.....I made my appointment at the dealer..... and.... no fix. I was told it's a fix only if broke type "B" 01B81. Before this causes too much of an issue... I'm already looking into it. I'd like mine fixed before the antifreeze finds it's way to the internals of the engine... I'm funny that way.
On the other hand, I did get the seatbelt fixed - didn't retract all the time, I also had the front end clunk fixed - bad ball joint.
I didn't get the fog light fixed - cracked (working on this one also), I didn't get the radio fixed (goes in/out - couldn't identify at the dealer), and I didn't get the drivers window fixed (pops into place - but it acted fine at the dealer)

There is a time frame on this recall (meaning it will not always be available). You do NOT have to be leaking. This program will be in effect until September 30, 2002, regardless of mileage.
LOW VOLUME PROGRAM
This recall is being processed as a Low Volume Program. This type of field action was announced in an All-Dealer letter dated May 10, 1999. Owners will be contacting the Low Volume Recall Coordination Center to arrange for this service. We will advise you via MORS III of the owners that chose your dealership to perform the service provided by this Owner Notification Program. The parts will be ordered for you by the Program Coordination Center. You are requested to contact the owner and arrange for this service. (Note that our Coordination Center will advise owners that they will hear from you within the next two business days of owner contact).

It works like this:
You call in to the Low Volume Recall Coordination Center and schedule this service. Ford contacts the dealer via MORS III. The Program Coordination Center will order the parts for the dealer. The dealer is to contact the owner whose name they receive to arrange for the service (obviously only when the parts are available at the dealer). The dealer is asked to contact the owner w/in 2 days to schedule this service as Ford's Coordination Center is advising owners that their dealer will contact them w/in two business days.
It's that simple!

Owner Notification Program 01B81
I'm still not sure about if you need to be leaking or not. I would think it doesn't matter, but it may at specific dealers. We'll need to get some more clarification on this soon.

Stopped by the service department yesterday after reading about the recall. Dealer printed up the letter. Dealer said its a recall for inspection but nowhere in the letter does it say inspection. The "Service Action" says "Dealers must replace the supercharger's intercooler sub-assembly and top off the intercooler coolant system on all affected vehicles". It describes "Affected Vehicles" as all 99-00 Ls. In "Reason for Program" it doesn't mention anything about aftermarket, modifications, etc...
I called SVT and was told its a replacement regaedless of leak or no leak. Letters will be mailed out to owners in near future. I think that the IC replacement is automatic for 99-00 Ls regardless of mods but Ford may still void powertrain warranties on Ls with mods even if they replace IC. BTW, the "program Terms" state "This program will be in effect untill September 30, 2002, regardless of mileage".
Sorry for long post!

ITS NOT A RECALL!
You must 1st get a letter from FORD. Then you must call the notice sender so "THEY" can send the parts to the dealer you tell them to send them to. Then when the dealer gets the parts, they will make an appointment for YOU to come in and have them changed. LEAKING OR NOT! Its not up to your dealer, its up to you IF you get the notice from FORD.
You call in to the Low Volume Recall Coordination Center and schedule this service
Where is the number you call,, I see the reference to it but no number, mine started leaking this week..
Thanks , Ted O.

Some will NOT receive a letter from Ford, as they are 2nd (or later) owners, or their mail may get lost. You should call Ford's Customer Service Hotline, or you should call SVT, or possibly we'll have one or several owner's here post what they receive so you '99 & '00 owners who do not receive notices (for reasons mentioned above or other) will be able to participate in this as well.
There also isn't any reason why your local dealer couldn't get this information for you as well.
Concerning if this is a recall or not:
LOW VOLUME PROGRAM
This recall is being processed as a Low Volume Program.
This recall is being processed as a Low Volume Program.
This is the same program that Ford used on the '99 Cobra for its engine's low hp problem (intake, exhaust, computer, etc.).
