Cool Got GM's attention...

From Friday's Atlanta Journal, Wheels section. Seems GM is showing what they call "toys" to see if they can develop a niche market. One in particular caught my attention:

"Chevrolet Silverado SS: Chevy calls it the 'Corvette of trucks.' While the 6-liter V-8 in the production Silverado develops 345 hp, the concept comes with a 6.6-liter V-8 delivering 500 hp and 500 lbs-feet of torque. It is teamed with the six-speed manual from the 'Vette and complemented with a sports-tuned suspension.
The Silverado SS, like the Cavalier Z24s (another concept mentioned elsewhere in the article), delivers head-snapping off the line power. GM officials said if the SS, or a version of it, goes into production, it could be in showrooms in 18 to 24 months.
'This is an example of a limited-edition, high-performance model that would get people thinking about brand image,' Reuss said."
-end of section-

Let's see - limited production, high horsepower, brand recognition, truck. Kinda sounds like they're coming up with a "me, too" product to go against the L!

Thought y'all might be interested.
Later...
Bubba

That SS truck concept has been around for quite a while. The way GM's been hmmm'ing and haw'ing about it, I'll believe it when I see it.

Check out another piece of the artical:

AJC Wheels Section (9/14)

400hp car... 600hp SUV... Awesome numbers. Thing is they've had rumors and pictures for a while. The old board had a post about the SS truck. So this really is old news; day late & dollar short.

---------------------------------------

> Cadillac Seville STS/Escalade Twin Turbo: The STS, with plastic lower body cladding, was developed as the pace car for the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race with a 20-hp boost, to 320, from the 4.6-liter V-8 in the production STS. This was done with engine modifications rather than supercharging.

''With a few changes in compression and exhaust back pressure, we could get 400 hp in the STS,'' said Judy Greig, assistant brand manager for the Seville STS, soon to be known simply as the STS.

''The question is, do we do it to the existing model or wait for the new one ('03). There's only so much money to spend, and we've done a lot with the new CTS (formerly Catera) coming out early next year (as an '03),'' she said.

The concern is that a performance Seville would take some of the edge off the new model coming for '03.

As for the Twin Turbo Escalade, ''You've got to like a vehicle with 600 hp and 600 pounds-feet of torque,'' Reuss smiled, ''though actually we de-tuned it a little down to only 580 hp.''

While a 600-hp V-8 attracts performance enthusiasts, the paint job may show up in the GM line sooner than an Escalade rocket.

''It's called Silver Ice and has glass beads inside the paint,'' Moss said of a finish that appears to shine as if wet and stands out from blocks away. GM is purchasing the paint from a Japanese supplier for future models.

Story of my life. Guess that's what I get for now following the "new car" scene for a few years!

If I remember correctly this thing would cost about $70,000, at best.

So it's a comparison vs. 2 Lightnings not 1.

I waited for that truck for two years. Every time I heard a new story about it, the price tag kept getting bigger and bigger. You know....... AWD, Ext. cab, 400hp with no blower, blah, blah, blah! In short, another rich boys toy from the General. The C3 came out at what, $39,000 or so? That made up my mind in a hurry. It was time to buy an L! I'm not sorry at all.

Here's a link to a more resent version of the SS concept. 'Seems their still taking new ideas. It's a little more of a real world version, also.
