My 1-2 clutch pack is worn out and needs to be replaced. Can anyone tell me what the most heavy duty replacement available is?

I would call up precision industries and see what they say. I know they can build these tranny's up to handle a chit load of power.

Tim, you can use the deisel setup, it has one extra clutch disc, which will give you 20% more clamping force. I believe that is the only part in the Lightning trans that was not upgraded to the best Ford had on the shelf. I'm sure Gregg can go into more detail.

here's an email i got back from level 10 about their "heavy duty" upgrade kit for our trannys..

www.levelten.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Brooks ,

Thanks for the inquiry!Sorry about the delay. This is what is included is PTS KIT chutches, steels,oh kit. This kit fixes the problem Ford is having with the 2nd clutch failer. The factory program shuts off 3 injectors when it shifts into 2nd.The reason for this that the torque capacity is greater than what the transmission can handle. The after market fires all 8 in 2nd this cause the 2nd clutch to fail.We have the fix!The latest MMFF on THE FRIDGE has the latest parts.

PTS KIT FO 113-5000 621.00
PTS HYDROSYSTEM FO 210 -4000 149.00
PTS BILLIT TORQUE CONVERTOR FO 355-5000 800.00

(i'm guessing he messed up and typed 3 instead of 4 injectiors)

IS IT

"Time 3-4 hours to install Skill 2 Must remove transmission. "
OR
"Time 4-6 hours to install Skill 3. Must remove transmission. "

Install time ??

doug, in our case, i think you add the two maximum times together if we try to do it ourselves..
i'll take it somewhere to have it done.. i've no need for a hot transmission fluid shower.

Brooks,

If head to Cincy, you damn well better make a pit-stop in Indy.

Been tweaking a little here and there, and sometime between now and Thanksgiving I'll be sending to Sal a new Forward/Direct clutch package made for Lightnings that will be stonger than the Diesel "044" and the current "036" clutch pack for a truly bulletproof package. The new "044" (direct clutch) will have 7 plate stack (40% improvement over stock package) and the "036" (forward clutch) will have a 6 plate element which is a 33% improvement. I'm divided on whether to make it the whole heavy clutch package or just the parts that are different than the stock ones. (input please, it'll be cheaper with just the modified parts). I'll also be removing the "wavy" plate which is there just to soften the shifts up, so this is going to be a really really firm shifting package. I have one at the machine shop now, should have test units in a few trucks in two weeks ( the first one is mine). Sal doensa't have any more info than this, so don't deluge him, and it's a work in progress, but I've decided to solve the weak intermediate clutch problems I hear a lot about lately.

We can rebuild it, we have the technology, we can make it stronger, faster, better. Hope it comes in at less than 6 Million dollars, too.

Suggestion??

Hello, Mr. Factory tech! I've been reading your posts for a while and you prove your credibility with detailed and specific info.

I am thinking about putting an aftermarket centrif. blower (ATI) on my 2000 4x4 F150 w/ 4R100. What should I do to my transmission minimize future financial heartache? Anything? I remember one post you made that seemed to shade software/chip alterations to the transmission as bad. Perhaps should I leave everything the way it is with my trany?

Your advice will be most appreciated.

Frank

The 5.4 4R100 model is the weakest iteration of the tranny, it has 3 gear planets all the way thru, only a 5 plate OD stack, and the weaker direct clutch. All Gas models come with a 4 pale "044". The planets are in the "360"
You'll want to add plates to the O/D stack, get 6 gear Low/reverse and forward clutch planets and get a 4 gear o/d planet. You also may consider a balanced heavy clutch package (mates with a balanced coast clutch).
You also want a shift kit, buy mine or Level 10 or one of several other ones, it's strictly a matter of prefernce which one, they all so about the same thing, but get one. (I think mine is best, but hey, it's mine after all).

You may also consider a boosted pump, a 6 plate coast clutch with ball bearings (the stock one has a plastic thrust washer) and a deep pan with a drain plug.

That's about it for the novice, I could do more, but it gets into serious money after that (maching and fabrication).

Hope this helps,

G
