More questions about hard-wiring radar detector...

I found this excellent tutorial:

http://users.ev1.net/~temurphy/lightning/rdinstall/

...but still have a few questions. I don't have a multi-meter handy to test all the wires myself, but I was wondering if the switched power wire is affected by the dash illumination dimmer. Also, is there any change in power when the headlights are turned on? The dash gauges and overhead console display get darker, and I want to make sure the detector's range won't be reduced by any fluctuations in the switched power line.

Perhaps someone else has already determined that the dimmer capability is handled through another wire altogether?

Thanks,

There are 3 power leads up there. Two are switched, only one is effected by dimmer...the third only measured 4v on my meter, so I have no idea what it is.

Question

Thanks Daniel,

I can get my hands on a multimeter tomorrow but would love to start using the Valentine 1 tonight....

Do you happen to remember which color wires they were? Are the color recommendations in the link I provided in my first post accurate?

I believe his is right-on as far as the lead you need to tap for acc-on.

Ben,

I emailed this to you also - when I was checking the power leads, my meter didn't notice a change when the lights were on. I believe the wires I indicated in my post are for running the small computer in the console, and therefore isn't affected by the lights dimming.

No guarantees here, but I hope this helps.

Thanks for the help guys...

Went out to the L just now and opened the fuse panel to examine that route. I may have to sleep on it before I start messing with things...
