Angry HELP!? Blew 2 ignition coils!?!

TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT,Cruising down the street on my way to the camp and all of a sudden we hear some loud popping noises under the hood of my 00'. Blew one of the ignition coils on the passenger side of the engine. I call for help to bring me to the nearest dealer to get one (102.00 a piece). Put the new one in on side the road, and what do you know it is still doing the same thing!! After a long battle with road side service, I finally got them to tow the truck to the dealer nearest my home without having to give up an arm and a leg!!(I was 70 miles away from home)
Can someone please tell me what can cause this!?!? I noticed the engine was missing a good bit before it happened. Also, I just installed a chip and 90mm MAF about a week before this happened.

It was a bad day today

Nick

Man, I hope you pulled that chip before you took it to the dealer!

You bought one instead of getting the warranty to cover it?

?, is your intercooler leaking?

Question

How in the world did you figure that out on the side of the road (and which coil it was) and have a 7mm swivel socket handy? And I thought I was good at fixing things.....

yes I did take the chip out......I figured out which coil it was right when I opened the hood....It was the one STICKING OUT OF THE HEAD!!.......there is one small bolt that holds it in place, it is very easy to change. it also has a two prong plug that plugs into it. When I went t the nearest ford dealer, they told me that my dealer will refund the part since it is under warranty and since I was stuck on side the road...thats why I replaced it.....but it blew the second one immediately...It is a part that sticks into the head with a yellow sticker on it that says motorcraft....It is at the shop now ,im waiting to hear what went wrong....Anyone have any idea what might have caused this??

If you immediately blew the second one you probably has a short in the wiring harness. Early on there was a problem with the rear coil going out because anitfreeze was leaking on it from a heater hose connection, but I think they fixed that.

nikslightning,

When the coil popped did you hear what sounded like a MAJOR exhaust leak afterwards? I had something like that happen to me about a week ago and it was the spark plug being blown out of the head. They ended up replacing the entire head. If you have aftermarket spark plug in it, put the old ones in it before you go to the dealer otherwise they will give you hell because the plugs were aftermarket. Hope you get it figured out soon.

the only way you could have blown the coil pack out of it's proper position is if there was some pressure built up behind it. It didn't just jump out of the hole. either your spark plug is loose allowing compression to leak by, or the plug has blown out completely. that is why the second one blew out as well

later,
chris

Thanks for the info. I have a feeling that the spark plug probably blew out. I wont find out the details till Monday though.
