diesel noise after oil change

ok, hit 1200 miles and had the oil changed... now i hear this diesel engine sound when im at an idle.. if i crawl under it, it appears to be coming from the tranny/oil pan area (hard to tell, im sick and my ears aren't clear yet)... i did a search and read through alot of posts, but most of them pertain to 99/00 trucks..
mine is a 2001.

what kind of oil is originally in the motor? I assume it's not synthetic...

another way to explain it... sounds like a few aerosol can's being shaken at the same time and the agitator makes noise.

ideas?

Mine makes a little noise for a while too and then it settles down. I even burned a half a quart when I switched to synthetic. It's fine now and doesn't use a drop.

What are you using for a oil filter ?

Make sure you use the motorcraft filter, it has the proper anti drain back valve on it.

Just changed the oil in my '01 at 3500miles. I put the Motorcraft 5w20 partial synthetic in with the Motorcraft 820S filter.

The very next morning, temp around 72deg, I noticed the piston
slap/diesel noise. Never heard it before the oil change and it does it every morning at startup now.

Like djc cobra, I would be interested to know what kind of oil is used in these motors from the factory.

Anybody using the 5w30 Mobil 1 noticed the noise?

JR

I switched to 5w30 Mobil 1 (w/ Motorcraft filter) at 3000 miles on my 2000 and noticed the noise initially, but only during the first few startups after the change. At 12000 miles now with no noise using the same oil/filter combo.

To djc cobra:
I have owned 2 L's; a 2000 and now a 2001. BOTH L's showed the exact same symtom AFTER FIRST OIL CHANGE as you have described.
The first 2000 L oil change at 800 miles (factory filter and also charged the filter itself with Castrol 10W30). Upon startup, ratling noise that continued to 3000 miles. NO noise after engine warmed up. Engine replaced at about 3000 miles due to piston slap.

My new 2001 L...changed oil at 1250 miles with factory filter and precharging the filter with Castrol 5w20. Engine very smooth and quiet until this oil change. Upon startup....ratling/knocking of engine that continued for 3 days (first cold start of each day) until this morning...started as when new....This is odd, very odd. In both L's used 6 or 6.5 quarts oil. It's as if the engine started up too dry and some unknown damage occured (scary huh?) or something is certainly different in the oil shipped with each new L's engine. Maby what we all need are pneumatic pre-oilers.

very odd indeed..

mine is still knocking... doesn't disappear after the truck warms up..

suddenly the 'new truck novelty' has worn off.

mine's a 2000 4.2, and i have 26,000 km on mine, with regular oil changes. I was using fram doubleguard & canadian tire filters, and it stil happens. However, i put in 10w30, and seems to have lessened.

djc cobra,

The only thing "odd" about it is the fact that numerous board members have no idea what you're talking about and just think you're whining. (like me) See post ----->>>> https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...threadid=33703 and take a look at what Gloria (last page) thinks of this.

I too, have the HORRIBLE oil change, piston slappy noise which is also accompanied by the BRAAAAAAAPPPP noise when accelerated briskly on a cold engine. I expect #5 to jump thru my hood any day now. And all this started when it was stock on my first oil change. And I even pre-filled the filter. And no, it was quiet when I bought it (I listened) and it started at 1,200 miles. It's getting worse by the day and I run this truck, but baby it too if you know what I mean. In other words, I don't thrash it when it's not ready.

Jim

Maybe they put 40wt in it at the factory to dampenout the piston slap noise. As soon as you change it, instant noise. Has anyone tested thes theory, and run 40 wt?

gforce,

I have been following your thread with interest. Don't whine so much

in all seriousness, this shouldn't be happening. I had the dealer do the oil change (it was free), so that eliminates any blame on me.

I'm wondering if Jay is on to something. Ya think they ran thicker oil at the factory?

I'm going to stop by the parts dept. on the way home and get some diesel emblems for the time being...
