My right front Goodyear F1 just came apart, and my left rear is smooth as a baby's bottom. So, besides a good alignment, I need a set of tires. And, winter is a few months away. I'm not sure what to do, but here are some of my alternatives:

1. Go to a junkyard and get 16x8 rims from a standard F-150 and put cheap all-season rubber on them. Wait until March to buy set of BFGs or F1s for the Lightning wheels. (Will 16x8s harm the drivetrain with long term use? Can/should I do this?)
Cost: ~$550-$700.

2. Buy a set of F1s now and brave the winter. (Nashville winters are occasional light slush/snow/crusty ice.)
Cost: ~$950.

3. Get a set of V-rated Toyo Proxes S/T (M+S) tires to fit L wheels that I can drive year 'round. They're flexible, but expensive, and I step down one speed rating.
Cost: ~$1200.

Similar dilema, ordered your option 2 from Tire Rack for $850.

 

I've seen advertisements for those Toyos and I am thinking about going with those for the winter. I'm still in the same boat as you. If I don't sell my other truck soon I might not even have to drive the L in the snow.

 

If you buy the cheap tires now, you'll still end up buying the F1's (or similar) later.
Thus, your cost next spring for tires will be: $550+$950 = $1500

I run 16 x 10" on my truck all the time. No problem. If you change your tire diameter your speedo will be off but thats no big deal. Just drive next to someone and figure out where 55 and 70 are and you got it. At low speed they will be close enough not to matter. I got Ultra wheels for 100 each from Discount. I'm running Pirrelli 285/65 R 16 Scorpion Zeros. Cost me 105 each. Last 60k. Speed rated 130, great in the rain, don't know about snow but you could put snow tires on the back. Speedo is off 5 mph at 70 reads 65.
