2000 Wiper Motor Recall
2000 Wiper Motor Recall
Received some information on how to find out whether or not your truck is effected by the recent recall. The person I asked gave me the following response: "Remove wiper arms , remove cowel vent cover on drivers side, can't remember how motor is mounted on the truck , wiper module may have to be removed which requires hinge to be moved, there may be a sticker on the motor which has to be lifted up to reveal the birthday of the motor,
affected build date 02-10-00 / 06-26-00"
I don't know about the rest of you but I'm not taking mine to the dealer unless I have to have it replaced.

I'm of the same opinion of not taking my truck in unless I have to. I'm still hoping we can get some better, more detailed information on how exactly to determine if we need a replacement.
Or is it we all get the motor replaced anyway?...

I think it was on most if not all F150's for 2000, no matter what model (L, SuperCrew, etc.). Just got the recall notice myself - I sure hate to take mine in either, but I'd rather not risk the whole catching fire thing

What dealer do you go to? Cause I need a dealer with a very leanient service department, Cause one of my friends works at the dealer by me in kearny and he told me the pic on every little mod that you have..
Let me know cause I have to get my driver side power door lock actuator replaced.
Thanks

It's not the wiper motor that is bad. It is the plastic cover on it. You guys are making too big a deal out of this. The dealer can replace that part in about 20 minutes. The only way you can check the date is to take the thing apart and examine the wiper motor. The date is stamped on it. Your build date has nothing to do with the wiper motor manufacture date. It's really no big deal. Make the appointment, take it in and if you're worried, watch them replace the cover if needed. I personally can't see ripping my Lighting apart just to examine the date and then putting it back together again and making an appointment with the dealer. Really, it's painless. Take it in. Off my soapbox now

C'mon now, removing the cover above the wiper motor isn't exactly "ripping my Lighting apart".
Ok, so I make an appointment with a dealer, take time off from work to come back, sit in a room reading last month's Motor Trend for an hour (they won't get to it right away), only to have them come out and tell me I didn't need to come in at all? Even worse, they give you the "We're pretty backed up, can you leave it here with us for the day?"
Or I could go out into my garage, take off 4 screws, 1 nut, 2 clips, read a date, and put everything back on in under 5 minutes.
BTW, I wasn't talking about my truck build date, I took the cover off and looked at the date printed on the motor. Of course if your truck build date is before 2/10, you can be pretty confidant that so is your wiper motor.

Mark_2kL,
I wasn't as lucky as you mine is 03/11/00
But you did leave a couple thing out that need to be removed: The wiper arm (but that must be the bolt that you mentioned) and the push plug in the wiper cowel. Just messing with you.
lol I got the idea, and it is only about a five minute job to check your self. I wounder if you can just bring them the wiper motor and put the new one on your self?

Damn, you're right - I forgot about that little plastic plug thing.
Now that you mention it, I had to walk all the way across my shop to get the proper tool to remove it. Then there was the hassle of going all the way back again to put it away. I should have just taken it to the dealer.

RedShift: I understand it's not a big deal. I just don't want to take the truck to the dealer if it's not effected by the recall. And... I wasn't talking about the build date of the truck. It's the build date of the wiper motors that I listed. Obviously Mark_2kL and hdmlnium understand how I feel. I'm just trying to help someone out with a little information I found. If you're not interested, that's fine.
For everyones information: I posted my original question on the BON forum and a tech there gave me the info.

SilverBolt,
I understand completely, I don't want anyone wrenching on my truck except for me if I can help it. It's not the mods that I have that I don't want them seeing it's the scratches and dents that I do not want from haveing them work on it. I have zero dings or dents in my truck and that is the way I would like to keep it. Nobody is as carefull with your truck as you will be, that is how it is and I had some bad experiences with dealerships in the past. My very first brand new car was a '88 pontiac Sunbird (I know it was nothing special) but it was brand new. It had to have some transmition work done so I came by to check on it and the had the left wheel on the hood, I guess to keep it out of their way. Anyway I was bull**** and they always treated me well after that. I now tell any dealer if I need service work done that I am very **** and I want my vehicle back the same way that I dropped it off. I had my intercooler replaced last week and they were very good with my truck, I told them that no one is to take it for any test drives and I want it back with out any dings or scratches. I stopped in to check on them and the tech that was working on it had blankets all over the front and fenders to make sure that he didn't hurt it. I thanked him and the service department for a good job. All was good on that visit but you never know when it is going to go bad until it is too late.
Just my take on this whole thing. .....Bill

hdmlnium: Bill, Sorry to hear of your previous bad experiences, "left wheel on the hood..." unbelievable. Glad it worked out fine with your L. We do see eye to eye on this issue.
Madhouse: LOL that's very funny. Sad we have to think that way sometimes but very funny.
