Best chip
Best chip
Hey experts...I want to be to hammer my 99L all day on the street, without knocking, running 93 octane. What chip do I want? It is now stock. Will the chip, alone, give it spunk? What else should I do to it?
The three best bang for the buck mods other than nitrous are: Chip (PSP, JL, JDM), Filter (PSP, JL, JDM), and pulley (PSP or JL). As for who's product to buy, make up your own mind. There have been many flame wars over whos chip is better. Just go with a tuner who you like, trust, and would like to give your money too.

Seriously though, all the chips add performance - that's it. If you're just driving it on the street, how can the performance, between any of them, be measured? It's entirely seat-of-the-pants.

In my opinion, there is no "best" chip. There is not one vendor, including myself, who's chip works great in "all" trucks. JDM, JL, Superchips, and PSP have customers with trucks that make butt loads of power, and customers with trucks that have not been impressed. They all have customers that have had pinging and other drivability problems, and they have all had customers that have had serious ET turning trucks, and trucks that showed little gain.
PSP without a doubt set the standard for Gen 2 Lightning chip performance back in 99. But with Diablo and Superchips brand tuners quickly getting on the bandwagon, all three chip brands now currently have equally impressive chips. And all vendors have great support if you have problems with your chip.
The best thing to do, is search the boards, talk to owners, talk to vendors, and see what everyone has to say, good and bad. Of course I'm going to say a PSP chip is best, but then agian, I'm a little bias
. Bottom line is no matter who's chip you get, you should be quite pleased.

We have tested all the chips from the well known tuners but one. We chose not try that one for a reason of our own. The programs we tested were the newest and greatest each tuner had for the time. On the street they all felt about the same with slight differance in shifting and kick down. At the track they were all close to each other (.10 differance). We just kept the chip we liked best for the street/strip.
With such slight differances, there was no way to say this chip x is better than chip y and chip z. So again, it all comes down to which tuner you want to use.
As for nitrous. I would hold off on even thinking about that untill you get a few mods on there and go to the track some. These things are monsters and nitrous makes it a whole differant animal. Not to mention nitrous is not very safe to run on the street.
Hope this help you some...
