Ford Safety Recall - wiper motor
Just got the notice in the mail today. Looks like there is a defect in the wiper motor park switch (in the wiper motor) that can malfunction and cause one of the following conditions:
Anway, just wondering if anyone else got this recall, and wondering what prep details I should perform before taking it in.
If I had a chip, I would remove it and reset the computer (remove neg. battery connector for 10mins). But what about if I had a filter kit and throttle body? Advice anyone?
Thanks!

- loss of wiper intermittent park function (low & high still operate)
- complete loss of all wiper function
- complete or partial loss of wiper function and the melting of the plastic wiper motor cover, potentially resulting in smoke and/or localized fire (!!!)

Just got mine today too. Mine says something about a possible remedy being, "replacement of the wiper motor cover assembly." Get out !! Think they'll replace the plastic assembly with something a bit less combustible so that pesky melting plastic dosen't burst into---" smoke and/or localized fire." Localized???
As a side bar, my dealer had told me they don't mind a chip and ram air setups , maf's,etc, but the service manager most certainly DID frown on the pulleys. How bout yours???

There happens to be a small fiber disc in the cover, that was changed to.......what else.....same a little money! Well that disc is a problem now. The new cover will be made of the same plastic but with parts that should not catch fire. I just love engineering!
I got my recall today now just wondereing what i should do to the truck before i take her in i mean i got the PSP lower pulley, PSP chip, single blade throttle body and airraid with 10' big mouth filter. So what should i take off before i take her in i mean i know that the chip has gotta go but what about the rest ???

Good,
I never drove my truck in the rain until I got caught on the way home from the Woodward dream Cruise. I turned them on, and 30 seconds later stopped working. I was almost home anyway! It pi$$ed me off. I was waiting for a weekend to start trouble- shooting the problem. Glad I waited!
I will be doing the fix myself. The dealer won't get the chance to mess up my baby!
I still Love the Truck

)My service manager did say the way to tell if you had a problem is if on occasion the wipers don't "park" all the way and we do share the same wiper motors as regular F150's. He could be full of it though. Well, mine have been fine so far so I guess I need to pop the cover and see what kind of disc I have.

Spoon: Got my recall the other day too. Don't know the answer to your question but since the recall notice stated our trucks should be inspected first to see if they have the effected wiper motors, I was wandering if any of the Ford Techs on here could tell us where on the motor to find the date code and what date codes are effected. Maybe some
of our trucks aren't affected and we don't have to go through the aggravation with the dealer. Then you won't have to worry about the mods.

to all who should inquire...
for all of you who will be bringing your trucks into the dealer for the recall and are worried the dealer will void your warrenty because of aftermarket parts...
a filter kit will not void the warrenty, but just about anything else will.. any throttle body's, mass air meters, underdrive pullys etc, replace em with the stockers for the trip. or the nice service managers at ford will take a picture of what ever aftermarket part you have in your truck and file it, and void your warrenty.
OH, and for the people who have replaced pullys, the service manager can still tell. from the factory the pullys have a watermark on them that can only be seen under black light, so they take there nifty black light gun, shine it on your pully, (starting with the supercharger pully of corse
and see if the warer mark has been broken, if it has, sorry, you just voided your power train warrenty...)
this also goes for all who would get the adjustable crank trigger kit to adjust your ignition timing, again, you have to remove the crank pully, so the service manager can tell w/ a black light...
none will bother to check this if you just go in for a recall, but if you go in with say, a detonated moror, they will... something to think about when considering pullys...
again they take pictures, and a warrenty adjuster will can your factory warrenty, and ESP coverage in a heart beat w/ time to spare...

Springfield,
You're new showing 2 posts, yet have some important info to share. Watermarks?? You've got to be kidding. Where are they on the pulleys? If a pulley is removed and re-installed, is the watermark broken?
Thanks in advance.

TOTAL BS
They can't void your warranty unless they prove that that part caused something to fail. I never waste my time pulling chips and changing out parts. Wipers have nothing to do with a pulley
svt watermark
the watermark is on all ford SVT vehicles, and all 4.6 mustangs. the mark runs from the rim of the pully to the input shaft of the device it drives, so if a pully hase been removed and replaced, it will not line up...a broken water mark... i have been told it's on the crank pully bolts has well...
has said most dealers will not even check such a thing, but should you hurt your motor, the ford warrenty adjuster who pays a visit to the dealer prior to the work being authorized, most definately will...

While I was searching for confirmation of watermarks I ran across a cool protection device for our L's

Lot's of replies, and looks like a good discussion starting too.
I for one want to know if I can do the inspection before I settle on having to get parts replaced at the service center. If anyone discovers how to conclusively determine whether or not you need a new motor, please post here!
Otherwise, according to the consensus on the thread and the board in general, looks like anything above and beyond a filter kit requires removal and reversal to stock equivalents. Good to know, but I was hoping to wait until at least my 15k checkup before having to deal with that particular issue.
I think tomorrow I am stopping at my local Spencer's gifts and purchasing a blacklight bulb just for the heck of it. Hopefully I can look for this watermark and maybe determine if my wife's air conditioner coolant is leaking (dye was added when they refilled the coolant).
Any more impressions on the topic? Keep 'em coming! Thanks!
