Questions for 01 L owners
uh oh
I think I heard the clunck when turning to get gas day before last. My L only has 1500 miles on it (mostly highway). It did sound odd but I haven't heard it since. How do I know if I have the disease?
All 2wd 97-up F150 have the driverside lower control arn with the oval adjustment hole. I think the the wide front tires on the L's generates enough leverage on the lower bolt to cause it to move. Ford's fix is a joke. A star washer will not do squat. Only two sure fire way to fix it right. #1 herb's cluk washers. #2 weld a washer in place over the the oval hole.
I have the clunk bad. on both sides of the truck. my silver 2000 had it only when i turned right. not that same with this new 2001. i have already made an appointment with the dealer.

Not only do I have the clunk, but my sway bar popped the driver side U loop off the frame... So I fixed it by retapping the hole, and putting a new bolt in it (mechanic strike in St. Louis..). That held fine, until last week, the other side popped!!
Check out the picture I attached of the drivers side. The same thing happened on the passenger side now... grr, calling the dealer tomorrow.

On my 01 i didn't notice the clunk at all, however, The driver side lower control arm is scraped where the bolts go into the arm itself. It is moving and herbs washers will do the trick in keeping it solid. A good investment for peace of mind.

I never got the clunk, but before it could happen I welded the front and back washer in place so they wouldn't move. This was thanks to yellow00 and chris who changed over to the dark side.
They showed me where the problem was and I could see where the bolt had started to shift back and forth because of the frame wax stuff.

Mine has pretty much had the clunk from day one. The dealer is supposed to fix it, but after hearing a few comments about thier fix on here, I'll probably get some of Herbs washers. For now, I juist tell everybody that when you here the clunk you know it's a Lightning.
My 01 has 2600 miles and I think the first clunk was at just over 1000. I try to stay away from full-stop turns cause it whizzes me off. I will be putting on the washers and a full Hotchkis suspension as soon as I get the swaybars.
