break in period
Hey i was curious to see what the break in period as far as mileage goes for a 2001 L is?? I havent had a chance to drive as much as id like to, and all ive got is 200 miles on it....I really wanna floor her out but im holding back so i dont hurt the engine...BUT..how long do i have to wait??? Not being able to floor it in a new toy is pretty tough to do....
You broke it in at least 150 miles ago. Drove it like you stole it. It seems that the people that didn't hold back from day one have the least amount of engine problems. I'm one of them. No piston slap here. I didn't run around WOT everywhere but if I wanted to put it to the floor then that's what I did.
Be nice to it for 500 miles for best results. There's more that just an engine there... and they need it also. The rear axle should break in slowly... try not going over 70 until then. If you live in hot climates... this is really important. Things build up more heat when they're new. Hard driving just makes things work.
After 500 miles, you can go on as you normally would.... but the different parts are going to continue to break-in into the first few thousand miles.
Check to see when people got their best 1/4 mile times. I'll place money that it didn't happen at 300 miles. More like 3000+
Drive it like you stole it.... I like it, but it'll most likely cause you high mileage issues.

i have 840 miles on my 2001 L its already JL chip and filtered with pulley and ram air on the way. i went WOT with 50 miles on the clock. ive also raced a silver ram air ta, a 300zx, a 94L,a turbo regal,a 86 camaro, a 96 camaro ss, and a 383 stroker firebird with nos in these 800 miles. i agree drive it like you stole it and enjoy it!!!
btw the only thing i lost to was the 383 stroker firebird sprayin a 150 shot

Well there are many differing opinions. I am with LTNBOLT – Drive like you stole it.
With mine at 300 miles it would barely turn over the tires in 70 degree air. Tonight with 1500 miles on her she screamed them all the way through first and a little into second. Pulls real hard in 65 degree air… Still stock with a K&N. I got a pulley ordered that will go on at 2k…

I think you should drive it hard at the beginning because if somethings wrong with the truck, let it happen while it's under warranty. But the motor doesn't loosen up till you get 2500/3000 miles on it. The truck really comes alive at that time, atleast my 99 and 01 did!

Yeah, I use to do the break in thing thinking it might help. I have a younger cousin who never broke any of his vehicles in motorcycles, cars or trucks. He always had the fastest ride compared to like models and never had any mechanical problems.
I usually give them 50 miles and gas the crap out of it after that. I don't even think my L got that much relief because it had 30 miles on it the first time I test drove it and about 40 miles when I bought it 2 weeks later.
