I cannot find how to properly reset the computer after taking a chip out. I ask this because my old man loves my L so much that he is considering on buying a 2001 with a chip already in it. But he is very concerned with warranty issues. So, if anyone could help me out by giving instructions on how "not to get caught by your dealer for having a chip" I would greatly appreciate it.
to take a chip out & reset computer..
remove keys from ignition..
disconnect battery cable..
remove chip from computer.
wait 10 minutes or so before replacing battery cable.
putting it back in is the same.

leave the chip in
the dealer cant deny you warranty service just by having the chip installed! if it is an issue they have to flat out prove that the program on the chip cause the problem! not a 100 % positive but anyone else that can add to this please do?
rdy2rac,
I have talked about that before and you are technically right....but, a dealer can choose whether or not to serve you. IT depends on the dealer. One may be cooler than the other. Just take it to them and if they refuse you service, just go somewhere else.

I can't remember where I saw this but after I remove the battery cable (+) I put the key in the ignition and turn it to ACC wait a couple of seconds turn it back to OFF and remove the key, replace the cable and everything seems to be reset.(Radio)
Is this right???

An easier way to reset the CPU is to turn on your headlights for the 10 minutes after you unhook the battery cable.
I have to do it so often that I just installed a battery cutoff switch on my truck, allot easier to deal with. just flip the switch and I'm done.

Where'd you get your battery cutoff? I've been looking around for one...

NO....
You should have the key/remote in your pocket--then disconnect the NEGATIVE cable--then turn on the headlights(5-10 mins.)--then turn the lights off--then reconnect the neg. cable.

Most people think that by turning the lights on (or something else electrical) that it will drain the capacitors and "get all the 'lectricity out of the system"
. If that really works or not depends on who you ask.

If you want to make sure that its really all off and that the program cannot be detected, then go by a autotap system for 250 bucks and hook it up to your truck and computer and reset all the codes you want.
Thats what I do!
I bought the moroso battery cut off switch when I removed my battery and installed two optimas's under the bed where the spare tires used to be. It's a requirment to have one when you relocate the batteries. It just comes in real handy when I'm playing with other stuff and I don't want any power on!

Dealers CAN and ARE voiding warrentee's for having a chip.
Whether they can do it legally or not is a different deal. You have to go get a lawyer and fight to have it reinstated. Unless you know your dealer's policy on chips really well, might be easier to just pull the chip.

I was talking with my dealer today and he said other dealers can and will deny warranty work on vehicles with mods. There policy is to not say anything unless someone from ford asks and that rarely happens, but to be on the safe side you should take off all your mods, when trying to get intercoolers, trannys or engines ect serviced or replaced under warranty.
Um.. I have a question? The Premise is: We are trying to fool the dealer into thinking we didn’t have a chip. Meaning we are not giving the dealer any reason to go looking for evidence there was one previously installed? So based on that.
(Now, I haven't done this to verify.) But if you reset the PCM just before taking it to the dealer then won't the dealer know the PCM has been reset?
I would think you would get a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1000 indicating that not all of the On Board Diagnostic II (OBD II) monitors have completed. Until of course you have properly completed a “Drive Cycle” which appears to be and involved set of conditions to satisfy. Then the DTC code would go away.
So if the dealer saw the P1000 then they would know something was up and may look at the PCM and see the missing stuff on the connector.
Maybe I am all wet.. But setting here reading the service manual about Drive Cycles, I had to ask….
