Murray's auto parts has Mobil One on sale right now for $3.99 a quart and you get a free Mobil One oil filter. Not to bad a deal.

for my first oil change I decided to have the engine flushed to get rid of the old oil and then put Mobil 1 Full Synthetic in her.

shawns svt,

All this is my opinion. I only give advice that I follow on my 2000 L.

You did not say but I am sure you have a 2001. Your manual calls for 5w20. Mobil One is not available in 5w20, so the closest match is 5w30. Since nothing changed in the the engine from 2000 to 2001, you can run 5w30 without a problem. The only problem might be with Ford and the warranty. Check with the dealer first, but it should not be a problem. Remember to save your reciepts for the oil and filter. Change it every 3000 and use either the motorcraft FL-820s or Mobil One M1-210 filter. The call for 5w20 for all fords in 2001 was for emissions and fuel mileage. Mustangs are the same way from 2000 to 2001. Mobil one is one of the best oils you can run in your L. Do not fall for the hype of synthetics and extended drains. Stick to 3000. It gets expensive, but your L is worth it. Treat it right.

Sounds like an add for Mobil One, sorry but I just believe in it that much.

Synthetic only.....of some kind!

I put Ford 5w20/filter in at 1,000 miles(dino oil for ring break-in or whatever and to drain any eng. build-up contaminants). Changed it again at 4,000 miles but now used 4 qts. of synthetic Royal Purple #11(their 5w20 race oil) and 2 qts. of R/P 5w30 'street' formula--ending up with a viscosity of 5w24(?) and a k&n oil filter. Just (Sat am) made the same change again at 8,320 miles.

Use Mobil1, Amsoil, Redline, or Royal Purple---your eng. will be thanking you for thousands of miles.

Dan

Do fall for the extended mileage claims for synthetics because they are true. Mobil one was tested in three groups of cars that were run one milllion miles. One group had the oil changed at 3000, one group at 6000 and one group at 10,000. At the end of the test all engines were torn down and miched and they all checked out the same with specifications still in the parameters of new engines. Synthetic oil does not break down like conventionall oils. MRACER is wrong.

Noelvm,

Do you have a problem with me? Is there some reason that you needed to call my name when pointing out that you think I am wrong???

I don't understand why you have to be so hostile all the time. Is there some way I can help stop all the constant attacks and lashing out at others?

Really serious here, you are not happy, I think you need professional help.

MRACER

Well its nothing personal. You were the only one who claimed the extended life was hipe. If serveral had claimed it in this thread I would have just made a generic attack. Hell, when your wrong, your wrong, don't belive me call Mobil one and ask about the million mile test. I don't make this stuff up. Do you have anythng to back up your statement that the extended mileage claims are hipe????????????????

What I think that some people do not realize is that even the best synthetics carry dirt and metal particals the same as dino oils do and even though they don't breakdown in viscosity(as much) as dino oil does, it still is a river in which these contaminants (as well as carbon and moisture) can and do travel throughout your engine. In my opinion you can extend your drain intervals but after at least the first 4000 miles or so of the engines break-in(this is when the motor's parts first seat and produces tiny shavings and or acids).Afterwards I do not see any harm in 6000 mile oil changes with the higher quality synthetics IMHO.

I think it just goes back to how your vehicle is typically driven. Yes, I use a synthetic because I think they hold up better. But, for example, if you use the best oil in the world and only drive really short trips all the time, you might need to change the oil more frequently because of moisture build-up. How do I know you ask? I bought what I thought would be a cherry, '89 S-10 a couple years back. The perfect daily-driver from my friend whose wife drove it from brand new. It was started and driven to work 1/2 mile away, every day. And back. The oil was changed every 3k-6k miles as logged in the owner's manual. It blew up on a hot day just as soon as I bought it. A teardown revealed clogged oil return holes in the heads. It looked and felt like wheel bearing grease and the main bearings starved causing a weld-up to the crank.

If you drive for several miles per day before shutting it off, it'll heat the moisture out of the oil and keep things unplugged. I drive my L at 70 mph for 25 miles to work. My oil could probably go 10k or even 15k without being changed. But I change it at 3k just because it's my baby. And I agree with Mondo1 about contaminants.

Jim

I just heard that the new Corvettes will have 15,000 mile oil change intervals with the factory installed Mobil 1. Looks like the car companies are coming around, finally. Conventional oil is good for 7-9000 miles according to consumer reports. On my beater cavalier it gets changed at no less than 5000. Although the oil is black it is still doing its job. No flame, just facts. The oil companies love it when you change your oil every 3000 miles, more money.

See Mondo1's thoughts above. I feel pretty much the same way.

What I am saying is, I believe and I think it has been scientificly proven that Mobil One is much more resistant to oxidation and viscosity breakdown than a conventional oil. HOWEVER, synthetic oil does carry the same dirt , contaminants, and moisture around and through the engine that any oil would. Over time synthetic gets dirty just like any other oil. So that is why I don't believe in extended drain intervals. Maybe 5000 or 6000 is ok, but anything over that is crazy in my opinion. So what exactly is wrong about that. Seems like it's a judgement call to me. You go 10,000, I'll go 3000. Maybe it will work for both of us.

Here is another reason to go overboard with an L to be on the safe side. We are pushing the engine components harder than a normal truck or car. 15,000 mile oil changes...I think the car companies are hoping that motors are gone and traded in for a new one by 100,000 to 150,000 miles.
