JL pulley, Diablo chip and 4x4 pan installed (Lengthy)

Gang:

With the assistance and provided lift from fellow member Ole Fafl (THANK YOU!!), yours truly and Ole installed Johnny Lightning's new Lower Pulley, Diablo Chip, as well as a 4x4 Transmission pan and filter.

My previous configuration was a PSP lower pulley and JDM Chip (neither for sale just yet). Having previously removed the stock pulley and cage, swapping the pulleys was VERY easy. No converter to block lock tool required.

Initial thoughts and differences you ask?

Size = just shy of a quarter inch in JL's favor.
Performance = seemed to spool up a tad quicker and the Autometer gauge registered 13 lbs of boooooooost. It sure fried the F1 rubber in a hurry... Right Ole!!!
Misc = JL uses a longer allen head bolt than I received with my PSP pulley. Not a big deal there however JL opted for lock washers where PSP did not. I prefer lock washers wherever possible. JMHO....NO FLAME INTENDED.

In all fairness, I had JL adjust the shift points to keep the Blower RPM under 15k. (14945.716 to be exact). With the JDM Chip shift points and PSP pulley, the RPM was 14933.33~. My truck is a daily driver and must be reliable.

I had planned on installing a Line Mod Valve also but could not locate an in/lb. torque wrench. and the cheapest I could order one for was $109 through NAPA. uh...NO!!!! and all the tool rental places were closed...

In any event, the Diablo shift profile in conjunction with a Line Mod Valve would make shifts too hard for my taste (and the Mrs.). I've already been the recipient of the dreaded "slight head turn towards my general direction with raised eyebrow look."

Around town and under less than WOT, the shifts are consisently quick and firm between gears. At WOT, shifts are firm also but lack tire bark (that's ok with me).

So who's chip/pulley is better. WOOOOOOOOOOOO J/K J/K
For real now, what did you set your shift points at ?
I got the dreaded "slight head turn towards my general direction with raised eyebrow look" when I bought the L. Her exact words were, "Thats not a truck!". She's used to more of a "Ranch Truck". I explained it as a sports car with a truck body, and if not this I buy another 911. She don't like 911's.

Talking

Thanks for lunch and the test drive.

You didn't post you sig. so no pics.

When my wife saw the sticker you gave me, and I got the "slight head turn towards my general direction with raised eyebrow look."

The truck I told you about is $14596 with 19K miles. I think I may go ahead and call them on Monday.

oops!!! i was tired.......Images

Ferrari,

I had Johnny set them at 5450 as opposed to the JDM 5600.

Jeff,

The stock pulleys and a chip with shift points at 5600 RPM will spin the Eaton right at 14000. I'm not sure what the physical limits of the blower are but there are a few folks spinning over 16000 RPM.

Cool

Speedy,

Do you have some old track times to measure the two besides the ole ***-o-meter.

If you were just loosening and tightening the valve body then I would have put my palm in the center of a 1/4" drive racket. This gives you a much better feel for how tight the bolts were and you should have been able to get them back pretty close. If you're talking about adjusting bands them that's a different story.

Johnny,

I'll shoot you an email tomorrow regarding the WOT shift points.

Chuck and all,

I did a test and tune at IRP last tuesday running the JDM chip and PSP pulley. The weather was 90+ with high humidity all day and the track does not print temp and bar pressure on the time slips... Runs 1 & 2 were on the street side, 3 & 4 on the Race side; tire pressure on the F1's set at 26; 1100 rpm launch.

1st run: 13.47 @ 101.90 with a 2.017 60' (7pm)
2nd run: 13.68 @ 101.52 with a 2.158 60' (7:17pm) HOTLAP
3rd run: 13.59 @ 102.31 with a 2.163 60' (9pm)
4th run: 13.70 @ 101.84 with a 2.195 60' (9:40pm)

IRP is notoriously slippery and they did not prep it whatsoever.

It will probably be a couple of weeks before I have 'slips with the new goodies.

as a reference point, my best run to date was at WFC:

13.384 @ 103.02 and a 1.98 60' running the following configuration:

F1's @ 26 lbs
1100 rpm launch
Leaky intercooler
Diablo chip
JL Ram air
Stock pulleys

prepped track and cooler air.

WFC was the last time I ran until last Tuesday....

Cooler air please!!!!

Matt: Your catching up without adoubt! I hope everything comes together for this weekend @ atco. i plan on letting it all hang out! i hope to be running a new Air setup too! if it works like i hope. it should drop an additional .2-.3 off my et! in 90*air. I sure would love to run 11's without the juice! in 90*air! I Know thier will be alot of competition there. i hope the track is open fridaynight for some test&Tune! You better come on out and join the fun! JL

Cool

Speedy,

It looks like you were running pretty good considering the temps, humidity and 60' times. 1100 is usually what I launch at but my 60' times are in the 2.0's. Once the track was pretty slippery and I had 60' times like yours. That was probably costing you a couple of tenths even in those temps. It will be interesting to see what you run with this setup. Don't wear the F1's out before you get back to the track. LOL.

JL,

You keep wearing those attactments out. I like em.

P.S. Get that leaky intercooler fixed with the new one (unless this is an old sig)

Thumbs up

Johnnylightning,

Are you going to Atco on Friday night? I live within 20min. of Atco and would like to meet up. Also, if you have any pulleys available I would like to purchase one at that time.

update...

During my daily commute to work this morning, I had the opportunity to put the new goodies through some tests as the temp was in the low 60's and little humidity.

From a 20 mph roll, the Goodyears screamed bloody murder before resuming their primary responsibility. At the top of 1st and 2nd gears, the Autometer gauge registered on the high side of 14 pounds of boost. woo hoo!

The Diablo chip performed flawlessly and pulled very hard through the entire RPM band.

The second test encompassed stabbing the go-pedal from 60 mph. The Goodyears barked in disagreement and the boost SHOT to 12, climbed to 14, and remained until I lifted circa 120 mph.

Another observation is that under a 1/2 pedal kick down not flooring after downshift, the boost shoots to between 6 to 8 pounds.

In all fairness, I did not have the opportunity to test the PSP pulley in these conditions.

I smell 12's... FINALLY
