svt cougar?

seen a car last night going home. first thing i noticed was the saleen markings on it then when i got closer i noticed he had an svt tag on the rear. just wondering if they've actually made an svt or saleen cougar, or was this just a car with a lot of eye candy.
it did look good, and sounded better, even seemed to move quite well, although the fella driving it didn't seem to have a clue how to move through traffic .

I'm thinking Limited Edition(#1 of 1 made)...?

Maybe it was a SVT Saleen S/C GT Type-R prototype?

I think it was the one that Steve Saleen, John Coletti, and Carrol Shelby personally built in their garage at home. I believe it's the Mercury "Wild Cat" test car. It probably has the standard Cougar V6 updated with the Duratec multivalve septacam, with such extreme performance upgrades as a FrozenAir Cold Air Induction kit, Fat Mac Daddy performance exhaust, Quick sprint shifter, Super Candlepower icey headlights, Star Trek rear wing, Multi-rainbow color changing guages, and last but not least 32" Chromoly Speedster wheels w/ carbon fiber brake caliber.

Just kidding, some of those cars are kind of neat.

yep, that's what i thought, wasn't sure though. could have been some special release that i missed the announcment of. i figured if it was real someone on here would know.
maybe if i see him again i'll ask him what the story is behind his little decorating effort.
i'm sure i'll get one whopper of a story but it could make for a good laugh.
if i get the chance to talk to him i'll be sure and post "the rest of the story"

The hard core SVT Cougar S is on the way with 200 hp and firmed-up suspension and it should prove even better value relative to similar Japanese models. Oh, I almost forgot, the front end looks wild!
...and from another source:

Rumors leaking out of Mercury detail a high-performance version of the Cougar developed by Ford¹s Special Vehicle Team, the outfit that created the Mustang Cobra and Ford Lightning pickup truck. The SVT Cougar would have a modified suspension system and a highly tuned version of the Duratec V-6. The car may be available later in the 2001 model year.
...BUT, it looks as if this may all just not come to light even so:

You might recall that the Cougar S was intended to get the Contour SVT's massaged 195-horse, 2.5-liter V6 and free-flowing exhaust system, but now the thinking is that SVT hardware needs to stay within the Ford camp.
Who knows which was stated first...I didn't dig deep enough to check the dates.

I had a Cougar Eliminator that I use to drive in the early 70's. I believe it was a 69, sister's boyfriend. He use to let me drive it to the car wash so he could have some private time with my sister. Wonder why they wanted me out of the house?

Local Ford dealership up here asked us to take a look at their...

Cougar S, it was bright yellow (wrong color for the car, Silver looks best), and the sticker didnt have any info on it, so we didnt even test drive it.

2 days later, my buddy with the supercharged yellow import calls me up and says an acquaintance of his just bought it. Its a supercharged V6 fellows, still dont know how much power those things are putting to the front wheels, but I imagine its still less than the base model Mustang GT.

They ruined the Cougar name with this generation thing, they should have called it a Probe or something.
