Anyone ever put a Cut-out on??

My brother has one on his camaro. What it is basically is about an 8 inch piece of exhaust piping with a "dump" that curves off to the side of the piping that has a cap to close it (so the exhaust goes through the muffler), or you can un cap it so that you're not running through any of the muffler. Anyone heard of this or ever used it????

I was just thinking about this the other day -

What if someone made something like that but you could have a swith from the inside that would open it up whenever you wanted - that would be sweet! Whenever you wanted to give a rev all you would have to do is flip a switch and you would have straight pipes...and then when on the highway or just sick of the noise you'd pull the switch again and have a muffler...

I havent given it that much thought but it would be cool to be able to switch it instantly whithout having to get out and unplug it...

I have a friend building a 91 Camaro w/ a 383 and he is putting in an electronic cut out that has a switch you mount on the dash. I think he said it costs $120 or $140. If you want I can ask him whos makes it and where you can buy one.

Old, old 'trick'....I think I remember seeing a cable-activated exhaust cut-out in a JC Whitney catalog, or maybe it was on the back cover of an 'Archies' comic book(j/k).

Yeah, I got something like that on my boat. It's called "Silent choice" or something.

"Back in the day" (the 60's) everybody that did not have a lot of money (like me) would put cutouts on there cars, it was the poor mans headers.

Best friend hung out with this guy who did that on an older Monte Carlo. Very loud and when he switched over to not use the muffler, noticable power increase. But then again he had so much power he twisted the front frame of the car trying to do a power launch.

cut-outs

I put them on my L when I did the long tube headers. Lost time at the track with them open vs. closed, so I took them back out when I changed my exhaust. Sounded real cool, but had to go to get an x-pipe in.

Yeah....That is hard to believe. I ran a cut-out on my SS for a while (couldn't afford a decent catback)....and with it open it dyno'd 12 hp Higher than closed.

Well, i said screw it, and went ahead and put a cut-out on today. I could only fit it on one of the pipes, and its not too loud, but you hear that rumble. I got it installed and everything for 40 bucks. Not bad, and they did an awesome job. i'm not gonna say its "amazing" adn that i feel the power, but it does feel like it gets up and goes a little more.
Oh, and, yea on the camaros, they definitel help out hp wise. My bro i think dynoed 7 more hp with it uncapped. So, who knows, maybe im pushin a little more power.

Yes they have the cable activated ones in JC Whitney I have seen them. On a couple of are Turbo Buicks we have the "dump pipe" unscrew 3 screws and off the cover comes and you have a loud and free-flowing exhaust. I like it because you hear the turbo really good and it sounds sick. I love the whistle of a big turbo. I doubt I would put the time or effort into putting one of these setups on both pipes of my truck. Just not worth it in my opinion since I have the full exhaust already and don't wanna cut it up. -Mat-

Ive read about it on the board before. Seems like more HP but less torque so its up to you what you want.
