How fast do pace cars for the Indy and NASCAR races go?
Has a Lightning ever paced a race?

Lightning Pacers

I don't know about the speeds, but I can answer the pace truck question.

The Lightning was the official pace truck of the May 29th 1994 Indy 500. There were 7 white Lightning 94 Pace trucks built, just like the poster that everyone has. The details of the truck as to exactly how many and where they came from is a bit shady, as there are several stories explaining it, and the 3 people I know who have one all bought it second hand.

As for the new Lightning, the 99 graced the race track about 2 weeks before it was released to the public. I don't know the exact date, but it was in March of 99, at Atlanta Speedway. It was a red truck, with lights and pace decals. I have the race on tape somewhere, but there are not really any GOOD shots of the truck.

I still had the NLOC back then, and SVT had asked the NLOC to come to the race with a bunch of trucks, because they wanted to have the new Lightning pace the track for two laps, followed by NLOC club members in the old Lightnings. I asked many members to join in, and got a huge response, and then SVT just dropped the whole idea. Not surprising.

I think Nascar had red Lightning pace trucks back in '99.

INDY pace car speeds

CBQB3,

Being from Indy and having worked at Mecca (16th & Georgetown/Brickyard) in a previous career/life, I believe the pace cars used at IMS run approximately 110 all the way around.

The only truck to pace a race at Indy was a full-sized Chebbie C/K short box pickup for the '95 Brickyard. NO, this year's svck-*** buh-bye move to Olds by using a POS Bravada for the 500 pace car DOESN'T count....tangent.....nevermind....

Anyone have one of those prints to sell or know where I can find one? I'd LOVE to hang one next to the matching '94 Cobra Pace Car print in my office.

According to the FOX Sports guys, NASCAR gets "paced" at 80 mph.

Later,

Kentucky Motor Speedway

Kentucky Motor Speedway used two white 2000 model Lightnings for its inaugural season. They were liberally stickered and logo-ed and looked pretty good, all things considered. John Nolan Ford in Cincinnati sold them to the public at the end of the racing season last year - I went over to look at them two days after they were advertised and they were both sold. Has anybody seen them on the street?

Incidentally, they also used a couple white GT's with the same graphic treatment. They're still on the lot at John Nolan (tee, hee, hee...).

There's quite a few places that use them as pace trucks:

.” The original two-year sponsorship package, which included supplying the Speedway with Ford rolling stock for both track safety and executive staff use, will extend into 2001. New for next season, not only will there be an Advantage Ford Mustang GT Pace Car, but an Advantage Ford F150 Lightning Pace Truck as well. “Trucks are very hot, we’ve had four different divisions of them running at Irwindale in our first two years, so why not an Advantage Ford Pace Truck too?,” DeFazio asked
Original Pace Trucks:

(from the Daytona 250 truck race)

Rusty Wallace supposedly owns one that looks similar to that?

That same truck (or its twin) paced the Craftsman Truck race at Kansas Speedway last month also.

I remember Jeremy Mayfield saying he had a Lightning also, but I never heard which color...
