K&N Panel v. Stock Filter - Test Comparo

Somewhere in another thread, someone asked for a comparison of the stock filter vs a K&N panel filter. Because my K&N panel arrived yesterday, I did a little testing before and after for everyone's benefit. My truck is a completely 100% stock 2001 L with 5010 miles on it (well, I did put in Mobil 1 Synthetic if you count that as "non-stock"). The truck had me in it (165 lbs), a screwdriver (not to drink) and a FULL tank of gas (between runs with stock v. K&N I even topped up the tank). Temp was 83-84 degrees, I ran both ways on the same stretch of road. No cool downs, except of course about 50 minutes during the change of the filter and to gas up. My last run with the K&N was cut short by some unexpected traffic, and I didn't feel comfortable continuing after having been up and down the same road at full throttle for so long. I launched at 1600 rpm, and eased on the throttle slightly before flooring it to avoid tire spin. (The absolute times could improve if I dropped gas, and launched more aggressively, but my interest was in relative times, so I did this for consitency. I've run as fast as 0-60 in 5.53 sec with the stock filter and 3/8 tank of gas)
I can only do 0-60 times with my Gtech because there just isn't anyplace to safely run a 1/4 without driving to the strip. In any event, these numbers are still usefull.

Stock Filter 0-60 (gtech); full tank gas

5.82
5.79
5.85
5.82
5.85

K&N panel filter 0-60 (gtech); full tank gas

5.72
5.77
5.73
5.76
(no fifth run due to traffic)

One other thing to note. The engine feels more responsive to throttle inputs with the K&N on. It responds faster to the same input than before. This is a great feeling when passing or taking corners.

Hope this is useful.

Last Thursday I put in a panel filter on my 01, before I headed out to the track. Being the idiot I am, i didn't bring the stock filter to get any comparison runs. However, I also agree that throttle response seems better and I noticed my boost gauge registering higher. I just got back from the store with the parts to make my own ram air setup.

Thumbs up

I can agree with those findings. I put a drop in K&N in my 01 and S.O.P. said it seemed more responsive, more whine, and slight boost gain. On top of that i can get real close to 18 mpg. on the I-77 to Ohio. Just my .02 worth.---Jim

Have a red 2000 with 5300 mi. Haven't noticed power gain with K&N panel, but mileage under normal (fairly conservative) driving conditions gives me 2.2- 2.6 more miles per gallon. Filter will pay for itself in 6-8 tankfulls of gas, plus you never have to buy another stndard filter. I think I just lied-- probably will buy JL Ram Air II.

Exclamation 4D THNDR please email me!!

I know that you dont want email from this board but i watched your track videos and i almost crap myself. What did you do for the powersurge enhancements? I only saw your HPs and nothing else. What did you do to her to make her run a 12.886?

The HP and TRQ numbers are a chip and filter only, haven't dyno'ed it lately. Add JL's ram air and a 61* day in Jan and I got a 12.973 and 12.988 on stock rubber. Got some M/T E/T slicks and built my own intercooler chiller and added PSP's lower pulley to get the 12.886 on a humid 80 some degree day a week ago last Friday the 13'th at the track in Milan, MI(visiting relatives). Seen an improvement with every one of the mods and recommend them all.

Glad you liked my videos, should have more after the Norfolk Rally next weekend.

Does a Replacement filter help the horespower and is it better than the stock for a 2000 L.

LOL. Yeah, Im with you. Before I got my Stage 2, I had a K&N panel in my stock box. I noticed the same things; better gas mileage, more responsive, higher boost, etc. I can definitely recommend them unless you're going to go the ram-air route. I like it even better.
