MAF Sensor Making Truck Run Lean?
MAF Sensor Making Truck Run Lean?
Hey guys my 02 lightning is running lean on both banks. I took it to a mechanic so he can check it out. He told me the problem is that the MAF sensor is making the engine run lean. And that the Volant cold air intake that i installed on it maybe the culprit. At first the service engine soon light popped up. And then after like 300 miles i noticed that it was a little rough when idle. It was barley noticeable. But now it's worse. Now it is very noticeable. What do i have to do to fix the problem? Thanks in advance.

If the only change you made was the addition of the Volant air box, that by itself shouldn't cause any "leaness." I'd suspect that in the process of installing the Volant box, some line didn't get hooked back up.
By itself, on a stock engine, the MAF is not likley to cause any "leaness" unless perhaps it's dirty.

Get some MAF cleaner, spray it and it is done, just be gentle the little wire is brittle and easy to break.
Now that should make your "mechanic" happy. I would not trust him personally, I doubt he has ever wrenched on a Lightning and would gladly throw "your" money at it until you go broke and it still won't be fixed.
What you have is a vacuum leak, plain and simple, either one you caused by the Volant install or the dreaded pcv line at the bottom rear of the intake manifold. For most, it is blower off, intercooler out for a scrub, vacuum hose rerplacement, while you are at it, new plugs and change the fuel filter.
Clear the codes and they should not come back unless there is another open vacuum line.

My mechanic cleaned the MAF using the special spray. Then i cleaned it again myself just to make sure. He's actually a very good mechanic who knows a lot about engines. I didn't even pay him for checking what the problem was. I only payed him for installing some e-fans that were not designed for a lightning. Oh and i forget to tell u guys that my friend gave me a MAF sensor a week ago. I installed it and it fixed the problem. But 2 days later it started doing like it was before. I've already spoken with some dyno tune guys. I've always wanted to add a 6 pound crank pulley. And they told me that the truck is not leaving there shop until they know whats wrong. I'll keep u guys posted.
Sounds like you MAY get it fixed. If they don't look at the PCV line behind the SC at the bottom of the intake, it will never be fixed.
Good luck

So I took it to the dyno shop today. And it turned out that the problem was the intercooler pump
. They had a pump in stock at the shop. So they installed it and it fixed all the problems. Not running lean anymore
. Then they tuned the truck. My mods: 6lb crank pulley, Volant CAI and electric fans. She now has 382rwhp/460rwtq. Thanks for the help.
