K&N O.E. part number confusion

I was just looking up the part number for the K&N O.E. replacement filter and they have 2 parts listed.

99, 00 Lightning part # 33-2140

01 Lightning part # 33-2140-1

Does anyone know the difference. I ask because I have a 2000 L, but I may end up with the 01 90mm MAF and stock 01 airbox. I'd like to buy the filter only once.

I think you'll find that the 33-2140 is the correct filter for the 2000...

Ok, I thought the airbox was the same size and shape on the 99, 00, and 01. I know the hole in the fender and the hole for the MAF are larger on the 01, but I thought that was the only difference. So I was wondering why the filter would be different.

So they can charge more for the 01 filter?

I just bought one for my 01. I had a hard time getting the top of air box to slide in the two grooves on the bottom of air box. Called K&N and according to them the 33-2140 and 33-2140-1 are the same element! I just had to trim the thin rubber strip at top of filter off where it slides into the two open slots and it works fine. They also said these air boxes come from different suppliers, therefor there are tolerance differences! WTF? The part # on my filter was 33-2140.

Mystery solved.

Skank:
You're right about the fit being weird. Takes a little work to get the box top on straight.

As I stated in another post, I have both my '00 and '01 stock factory airboxes and stock filters. Both filters have the same part number and fit in the other year's box.

Ok, i got it all figure out now. I went to order the K&N 33-2140. So, i say screw it, if it doesn't fit ill take it back. I got it today and it fit perfectly. I looked on the side of the box and saw, 33-2140-1 as the part nuber. Then, i looked on the stock number and it was 33-2140. HHHHMMMMMMMMM, evidently, it has two numbers for one part. Just go buy the 33-2140 and it ill fit.

HyE_BoLt,

Thanks for clearing this up. The really wierd thing was the vendor I was looking at had the 2 different part numbers listed as seperate items, and even had them priced differently. The 01 number was a little more expensive.

The vendor was www.martelbros.com

BTW, HyE_BoLt, my wife is Armenian
