Motor expired

Its been making the "fluttering" noise for a couple of weeks. Took it to the dealer and the mechanic told me the motor was making a noise. Duh. Earliest appointment they could give me was tomorrow. Yesterday flutter turned into a loud banging. I'm no mechanic, but sounds like a thrown rod to me. Waiting for Ford roadside assistance to show up now. They are going to get the truck a day early.

alphadoggy, Sorry to hear about your motor problems. As a fellow 2000 L owner, I'm interested in hearing your take on why this happened.

Maybe after they tear into it you will know more, I'd be glad to listen if you have any advice on how I can avoid this.

BTW, don't take this the wrong way, I am not implying that you beat on it and caused it to break.

Alphadoggy you've been experiencing ALOT of problems lately. Hopefully this will be the last of them.
My I/C finally began leaking a few days ago, SURPRISE. Like I said the most sought after classic in 25 years will be a numbers matching L (That will be ALBERTAN who has 120 miles on a '00L). I think we will ALL be counting on Fords '01 L motor to hold together.
OR I can still go and buy a cherry '70 GTO convert. The biggest problem for us is what other vehicle has the amount of interior room power? A few days ago I looked at the new Subaru WRX; pretty cool good power & handling, but if your used to interior room or above 6' it gets cramped, even if you have leg room. With two people in their your gettin kinda close through the shoulders.
Anyway sorry to here about your run of bad luck. I think we're all just standing in line waiting our turn.

Alpha,
Keep us posted on how this plays out. Let us know if you get the whole 01 engine or if they use the old 00 blower and intake.

I'd be turning cartwheels if my motor went and I had a chance at an '01 motor. Congratulations!

George,

Let us know what part let go if you can. If you heard the same "flutter" I've been hearing, there will be MANY of us (including me) in the same boat as you in due time, but not all of you after reading the replies to my earlier "flutter noise" post a couple weeks ago. My money is on a busted piston skirt. I too, am sorry for your run of luck lately. Did you get the tranny straightened out yet?

Jim

Alpha,
I only had the flutter noise for about 2 days when on cold startup one morning, it just started shaking and missing w/no power. Running on about 5 cylinders, no banging though. They put in a new engine, no questions asked. They said it was a "cracked block", but I think it was the infamous piston skirt. I got an engine, but not a believable answer.

Do you know if the dealer if going to give you grief regarding the performance upgrades? ie, the chip / headers / `wrong' spark plugs voided the warranty????

What performance mods? Everyone knows that my truck is bone stock. I have some theories about the cause of the demise, but nothing I care to publish on a public bulletin board. The dealer is not giving me any grief about the mods, though. Pointed out the headers, MAF, throttle body, and chip to them, but forgot to mention the plugs (forgot about them). They don't know what they are going to do, yet, Ford told them they wanted them to do some diagnostics on the motor before they ship them a new one. I know damn well the problem is terminal. If they do put in a new motor I don't see how they can get away with installing the old manifold - they have been aware for some time of the leaky intercooler issue on my truck. How can you put a defective part on a new motor? I guess I'll learn more tomorrow, and keep you all posted.
