G-Tech results for stk 01 airbox vs. open filter
meiwah98,
You will not have to change anything but the filter to a K/N if you choose to do so for your 01 with your new T.B.From my testing with the new T.B you should expect to see a 1/2 a tenth and 1/2 mph increase at the track. Not much of a gain for $425 but you will feel better throttle response with it!

Bfb,
I is difficult to do cool downs to test the G-tech. #1 it is a borrowed G-tech and I have to return it and #2 I must drive about 15 min to my testing road.
So I tested at the track Fri. night and did my usual icing. The actual numbers aren't important, but I ran mid to high 13.6's all night with the 01 airbox and high 13.7's-mid 13.8's with the open filter. Comparable temp, comparable wind, same length of icing and same lane on the track.

red2k#1554,
To be complete, could you PLEASE post all your 60' times, MPH, and respective ET’s including all decimal places. It wouldn't be fair to not provide all your data now. No need to post your RT's
.
Thanks… Joel

Ok I'll humor you...if you have any doubts that I actually tried it at the track here are a few numbers. Each column represents a single run:
Stock 01 airbox
60 ft 2.107 2.101
1/8 ET 8.808 8.809
1/8 MPH 81.80 81.99
1/4 ET 13.613 13.620
1/4 MPH 102.03 101.85
Open cone filter
60ft 2.128 2.149
1/8 ET 8.906 8.939
1/8 MPH 80.79 80.76
1/4 ET 13.792 13.826
1/4 MPH 99.98 99.98
Approx. 2 tenths and 2 mph difference.

I'm not doubting red2k#1554's times what so ever!
In fact, I've seen them first hand.
But I would say its hard to make an accurate comparison when you know that you've had problems with your truck.
Just recently you found out you had a faulty chip or program on the chip.
I would wait and see what the new chip/program does and then make this comparison all over again.
Please post your findings when you get the chip back in your truck.
Jason

Wow, those are incredible differences. Thanks for posting all the data. The testing I did (just like yours, but back in '99) resulted in the exact opposite.
Could you expand on what StruckBy99 is eluding to with respect to the chip problems you were seeing? When Jason wrote
is he referring to problems discovered yesterday (or today) or sometime before your dragstrip test?

There is one of these open filter vs box w/K&N panel arguments on almost every auto board on the net. Its funny how defensive the open filter guys get. I went through this last summer on my SHO, the stock box w/K&N panel filter won hands down in hot weather for street performance. At the track results can vary, because of cool down time. Myself I would never use the open filter on the street until the temps go down below 60F.
Either way I think you should redo the test after you get the chip back.
Too confusing
Cold weather program, hot engine air
Hot weather program, cold air induction
Which is it?
There are too many variables involved!!
Wouldn't you think a "warm weather program" ,which is what I have by the way, wouldn't be so tempremental.
Do you think that cold air might degrade the performance of a warm weather program?

I am a career scientist. There are not too many variables involved as the track conditions we're identical within that hour and I ran the same lane with the same 60 ft times. The only variable there was was the filter kit regardless of the program on the chip. It is true that one could go ahead and test another chip program the same way with both air kit to test the PROGRAM. But for this test, as many variables were eliminated as physically possible except for the airkit itself.
I think the open/stock setup is best....no wait
Hey guys whatever works DO IT. I myself just reinstalled my 4" modded stock 01 box. If I don't like it then I'll just change back. Thanks for doing the same day same track numbers for us Jim. Jeff

Let me throw out another theory why your results may have been different than mine. I have a '99 with the 80mm MAF. Perhaps the MAF is the bottle neck, and this is why Ford changed it to 90mm
. The open filter on the 80mm MAF maybe the equivalent to the 90mm MAF with a K&N Panel filter in the stock airbox. How did the K&N Panel filter compare to the stock filter in the stock airbox? I assume you saw some benefit when you switched to the K&N Panel. For that matter, you probably saw an improvement when you went from the 80mm to the 90mm MAF.
As Jeff stated above, more power to you with whatever works! In my opinion (for whatever that’s worth) you’re testing theories, you’re having fun, and you’re sharing what you’ve found. What could be better!
