My SES lite came on 5 mins. after cold start this am on my way to work. Have 5600 miles with no problems.

Checked Ford locking gas cap--on tight.

See sig for mods. Any ideas???

Re: First SES lite on dash?

Changed the oil & filter at 1,000 and again at 3,998. Didn't know that the PCM kept track of mileage to alert for oil changes?

your check engine (or service engine soon) light could be on for any one of several hundred different reasons. you need to have it checked or scanned (or EEC tested) to see what code(s) you have stored in memory or hard faults. you should just go to the dealer since you are still under warranty. without a code to go by anybody would just be guessing as to why the light is on. good luck.

later,
chris

Figure out what code you have yourself. Use the self-test diagnostic in the trip odo. Do a search for it. Naturally a gas cap on or off isn't going to cause a light. It doesn't have any sensors to it.

Here's a link too:

http://www.mustangworld.com/ourpics/fcar/dtcodes.htm

Those DTC codes aren't accurate for our trucks I don't believe, and there is many more.

Also noticed you called it SES light. Did you own a GM before? Most GM guys/gals call it that, and most Ford guys call it Check Engine

It is documented pretty well that a poorly sealed fuel cap can cause a Check engine light. The Fuel system is designed to be sealed and the pressure issues from the loose cap is what causes the light. Do a search and you will find many posts where loose caps caused light.

If you ask the dealer they will tell you engine light is related to emmisions. O2 sensors, PCM, Fuel cap, vacuum leak, all can effect emissions and trigger light.

The mustang world link can help narrow things down ... Disconnecting the battery may reset the light if it is a soft code.

But I would just take it to the dealer. Since bubba has the code to tell him exactly what is wrong he should be able to fix it first time.

Awesome, I didn't realize that. Thanks for updating me. For being on the net for years and having quite a few OBD-2 vehicles I've never had to deal with that issue before. Very cool...

Thanks guys.

I'm going to check the MAF(for "dirt/filter oil') and disconnect the battery. If no joy, I'll break down and go see the dealer...

Found the problem--maybe?

Well, after getting my birthday haircut and paying the state $265 for my 2002 tag, I started on trying to eliminate possible problems.

I took the intake ribbed hose and MAF down. Replaced the circular rubber gasket between the MAF housing and the JL adaptor(the original gasket looked misshapen, so I had ordered one a few days ago). I sprayed the IAT & MAF sensors(they looked clean) with an electronic cleaner.

I then reassembled everything. I looked at the intake hose and noticed the 'pipe' that connects the left(driver's side) valve cover was not attached to the ribbed hose(at the bottom-side of the hose). Well, well! I don't think I knocked it loose when i was handling the hose. I think it's been loose since Fri. nite(or just hanging and fell out this am when I got the SES lite).

A helpful Camaro owner--and he was helpful-I' m not being sarcastic, saw my JL ram air between runs(at the drag strip) and said I might gain a little more air if I removed the Outerwear 'sock'(JL has said the same thing). He whips out a Swiss Army knife and we use the screwdriver to loosen the clamps and I remove the 'sock'. In my haste to tighten everything back up and move my L closer to stadging, I may/probably knocked the pipe loose and since it's on the bottom, didn't notice it.

I also disconnected the battery today to zero everything out. Time will tell...(fingers crossed)
