Question Lightning Stereo

Ok I love my new Lightning but have been a little spoiled by the stereos in my Fiance's Lexus and my old Tundra. I am not a "audiofile" and do not need a 10,000 dollar 1200 watt uber system. I would however like to upgrade the speakers. I would prefer to keep the stock head unit but am not totally averse to an amp.

What are your suggestions. I would like to fit 6x9s in there but I get the feeling it is only 5x7 of 6x8. Please correct and educate me as needed. So what is a good cost effective upgrade to the stock system for somebody who is pretty happy with what is in there now, I just need cleaner sound with a little more lows.

Thanks in advance

Chris

This is a great site

You are correct in assuming that 6x8's fit in our trucks. I just replaced my speakers with Pioneer's TS-A6865. The music is a lot more "cleaner" with the highs more pronounced. Just check the FAQ's under speakers and you will find more info and pictures that you know what to do with

Chris,

There is a ton of info. on this board and worth researching a bit.
I have replaced the door speakers with Polk DX7's
(but will still upgrade these) added a 5-channel Kicker amp (awesome power to drive entire system) and added (2) JL 8" Microsubs for the back.
The system upgrade cost me about $1000.00 total and is well worth it. I did not run any power to the factory rear speakers and do not miss the back fill-The fronts and sub's do it just fine.

Cool

I just put in a Rockford Fosgate system in my truck for roughly a thousand dollars... And man was it worth every penny... It was my girlfriends idea to go with fosgate and man what a girlfriend... She was smart and right on the money... I love my sytem. CD head unit 4 5x7 speakers and 2 10inch subs with an amp pushing the subs... wow, if your going to upgrade go for fosgate

For a direct replacement in speakers here most people would suggest:

Polk dx7's
Pioneer 3ways, or I suggest pioneer 2 way w/ compression horn tweeter.

I 'upgraded' my f-150 system with a Kenwood head unit, 2 rockford power 150 amps, rockford 5.25's in Q-pods, and 1 12" Rockford sub behind the seat. I use a Rockford preamp/equilizer to control the system. I dynamatted the interior of my truck, and all in all.... Great sound for $3300 bucks. Pricey but good

Presently working on a $5000 system in the L. Most likely gonna get back in the competion scene again. This truck gets too many looks NOT to compete with!

Most people will be suprised by what a good set of speaker will do for a stock system. It won't image work a crap, but tonally, you should be satisfied.

JL Audio also makes a direct replacement coax speeker that will fit in the stock openings. If you want to keep your stock head unit I would look at these.

Arrow Thanks For all the replies

Thanks for all the great replies. My fiance' wants to know if some of you with the competition systems actually have room for passengers.

I am probably going to go with 4 Polk DX7s they sound pretty good and as much as I would like better base response I am not yet ready to give up the money or space for a sub. Do they make small subs, say 6 inch or so? Just curious.

Anyway thanks for the help.

Where do you find the Polk DX-7s? How much? I can't seem to find them even on the net. I've heard these are the way to go.

Red face

cslinger -
I just had some Polk MM465 components installed in my 2001L and the system rocks even though I kept the factory HU!!!
These components (6.5" woofs and 1" tweets) are amazing and sound fantastic.
I am driving these comps with a Sony 404EQX and there is so much great sound from them that I disconnected the rears (for now)...
Polks 5x7 are a good choice, BIMHO do not compare to components/sets.

Good luck,

I went with the Kicker RS6 component set which includes a 6.2" mid and 1" tweeter. It made a tremendous difference over the stock speakers. Also in the process of installing a pair of 12" Kicker Solo Barics once the box is complete. I haven't decided on the amp but am leaning towards a RF 500.1 or a Kicker amp.

cslinger: i hardly lost any passenger room with my install..
i did take the carpet & molding off the back wall to gain an extra inch of space.. every little bit helps.
