how to get the best 1/4 time?
how to get the best 1/4 time?
I'm going to take my truck out to Laguna Seca for the first time. What are the steps to getting the best time?
Here are a list of questions that I would like to have answered.
Do I start off on D or do I start off on 1 then proceed to 2 and then D? If it's the latter, where approximately on the rpm's do I shift?
Is it best with overdrive ON or OFF?
When taking off, do I start off from idle or do I get the revs up to 1000?
Are there anythings that I have to turn off or close to get a better time.
I have a Borla exhaust(cat back), air raid air intake, and a soft tonneau cover.
Help me out guys. Thanks for all the advice guys.

well, from my little track experience and by watching and talking to others the launch is the most important thing!!!! I have '00 L and when I went to the track I ran 14.02---stock. I reccomend that you launch at 1000-1200 rpm and DON NO MANUALLY SHIFT!!! Leave the truck in over drive and HOLD ON!!!!! If you manually shift you run the risk of blowing up the tranny of hitting the rev limiter on the truck and then you are a dead on the track. Do not do a big burnout, just a couple of rotations to get the crap off the tires and stage up. Just a few of the things I have learned with my truck at the track. Have fun!!!

Start off in drive. The computer shifts the trans better than humanly possible. There's too much lag time when shifting by hand to properly time your shifts.

Although some will dispute O/D on or off you do not approach the speed to achieve O/D(approx 125MPH) so it would have little effect.

Torque it to 1000-1200 RPMs and roll into the throttle on the third yellow.

Turn off your A/C or they may boot ya for dripping on the starting line. Pull your mirrors in and remove the antennae if you want. Tailgate up or down seems to have little effect.

Drive around the waterbox and torque up your tires enough to spin the trash off them(2-3 sec burnout) and come out spinning to pick up some of the VHT off the track. Not too dramatic though, you don't want to bump the rev limiter(your boost will cut off).
Courtesy says to prestage(top lights) until your opponent prestages then stage(both sets of lights). As the lights come down begin your launch at the third yellow and work from there. You probably know but you are trying to achieve a .500 time on your reaction time.
If you get into the 13's you are required to wear a helmet. Some tracks rent them to you. Some will let you slide if you're a newbie and tell you to bring one next time.
Try to get there with a 1/4 of a tank of gas at the most. If you're really bent on getting a better time then lose your hitch and your spare tire(the one under the truck).
The first 2 seconds is the most critical, after that the truck does all the work and you just hang on.
THE most important thing: have fun
WAIT UNTIL WINTER.
The difference between 50 degrees and 100 degress is or can be .5 to .7 in the ET. Be careful when trying to compare you times with others unless you know the temps, humidity, and BP. All these things effect your ET. Remember if its 90 degrees the air just off the track where you are going to run is probably 135 degrees. Nite racing will produce better ETs than day racing.
Good Luck.

With the F1's..spin the tires a few short times is all thats needed
(mainly just to clean the dust off)
With slicks or ET streets...Get them HOT! (HARD BURN OUT)
As far as tire pressure in the F1's..You will hear just about everything! Use the pressure that works best for you at the track your at! What works best for me is 25 lbs in the rear and 40 lbs in the front (Try different pressures)
As far as launches..1000 rpms seems to be about the average.
Depends on the track! Some will have better traction than others
Slick track...idle and roll on the throttle!
Good traction...1400 rpm's and WOT
And work from there! (could be anywhere in between that)
Good luck!

After having carefully measured the bed of the truck, you can bolt 2 JATO units from a C-131 in the bed. With and exactly 4.239 second burn, you will propel your truck to a velocity of 157 at the traps with an ET of around 7.2
BTW --- let me know before you try this, I will nominate you for the Darwin Awards or something

Nix the JATO units, look for a take out engine from a Harrier
