Talking traded in z06 on 2001 lightning

hey all.....

yes you heard it....new guy on board here, who just traded in my 2001 corvette z06 on a 2001 lightning. this thing is tight! only have 300 miles on her so far, so still breaking it in.

z06 was an incredible, incredible machine, but the oil consumption issue that gm has on the 2001 z06's bumbed me out.

anyway, just ordered a superchip, fsp pulley and intake, and plan on installing after 1000 miles. any break in secrets?

Good trade, man!

Break-in secrets - DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT. But only if you want it to run good and fast later...

Oh WOW!! That's the only thing I'd consider trading the L in for, and I just test drove an '01 Cobra convertible the other day!! Yeah, the Cobra was fun, but it sure would'nt run with my L.

Sorry to hear about the oil problem with the Z06. What is the matter with them? I've heard of this complaint before.....

Congratts on the new ride, I know you will love the Lightning.

I bet you will love the chip, from what I have heard Superchip is now using JDM's programs for the lightning.

As far as breaking it in I just drove it the way I do now, pedal to the metal. I have 10,000 miles and it hasn't burned a drop of oil.

Ok... so about bad is this oil consumption issue? It is related to driving hard? I heard GM is not covering the issue if you track the car?? It is fix in the '02 motor??

I was toying with the idea of selling my track car and getting a Z06... please advise.

And what's a good vette forum...

Azeem, I would wait and see...

I was researching the Z06 (before I got the 00R) and read about this problem a while back. GM gave their statement, says it's from driving hard, but isn't that what the Z06 is all about?

And they will also void your warranty if you take your car to the track. Well you know my 00R doesn't have a warranty because Ford knows what it's built for and they let us know up front. But hey, I called SVT told them I had some damaged parts and they sent me new ones, free! Had a question about the suspension and was able to get in touch directly with one of the drivetrain engineers. The sad thing about the Z06 buyers is that they were misled to think they bought a car for the weekend racer, backed by a GM warranty. Yeah, waaay back.

Just read the newest issue of Car and Driver. GM was saying something like "they weren't ready" when the first Z06's came out. Geez that would make me feel great. Now the dealers can't even sell the '01s.

The '02s are suppossed to have the fix, but maybe not the first batch. Personally I would wait for the 50th anniversary in '03.

You should visit corvetteforum.com.

Oh yeah, I'm not just doggin GM, gotta love those 99 and 00 Ford I/C's too!

Dean_Anderson:

Good to have you aboard. The ZO6 is a bad *** car, I was thinking about getting one a little while back when my intercooler started leaking at 4,200 miles. That was not a happy day for me and the ZO6 looked real good to me for a while. They had a new Red '01 ZO6 in the paper this past weekend for $47.995 I thought that was a good deal and I started thinking again. I always seem to get in to trouble when I start thinking. Enjoy the Lightning and I agree with most and drive it hard, That is the only way to break it in.

I spent a lot of time on www.corvetteforum.com this winter/spring and researched the Z06 for a long time.

Last I heard it was a confirmed "ring packaging" issue and that many, many owners are having excessive blowby and oil consumption issues (like 2 qts every 1k miles). Many GM dealers require documentation of the consumption before they will address it, and at the time I was looking to buy there was no "fix" that they were offering.

Last I heard (this may be bogus) GM was offering rebuilds of the LS6 motor for owners who had _real_ problems. If this is true then I guess the problem will be fixed for the '02 model year.

Still, it was enough to scare me off...especially after finding a pristine '98 S351.

Hey, Dean, you need to go see a shrink about your mental problems. No offense, but i think i'd go for a Z06 over the L. Don't get me wrong, i love my L, but i might love the Z06 more.

Anyways, have fun with it, its an awesome truck.

I did the same thing with my 2001 Saleen S281-SC, had a bunch of problems and traded it in for the L and never looked back. But a Z06 is a different story, though. You won't regret it, but you will miss the handling and the 6 speed. I see myself trading the L in for a viper or 2003 Z06..

Well, if you cut me I bleed Chevy Orange, but Chevy makes absolutely nothing like the G2 Lightning!!!

I remember there was a previous problem with some of the LT-1s burning a lot of oil, and the solution was to pour AJAX down the Throttle Body. It would scratch the cylinder walls enough to stop the oil blow by.

You would get your new vehicle out of the shop with this funny white powder on top of the intake.

You will really like these trucks, but we have our opportunities as well --- intercooler ---- clunk --- piston slap ---- block casting on right bank --- but I guess it is worth putting up with to have these beasts!!

CONGRATS!!!!
