i was thinking about changing the thermostat myself but cant even seem to figure out were the housing is. would my best bet be to let a dealership handle this? FYI im putting the stock thermostat back in it.

Follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the motor. Where is ends at the motor is where the t-stat is. Simple to change.

do you have to empty out much of the coolant? or can you pinch by without draining any?

You need to drain some coolant but no need to drain the system dry. About a 1/2 gallon should be plenty. Use a clean catch pan and re-use it.

This is not a big job. I changed my thermostat several years ago and I think I drained some coolant and just put some towels in the area of the neck to soak up any coolant when I took it loose.
