3rd brake light problem fix, cost-zero

Guys/Gals, I have been having an issue with my 3rd Brake light on the L for some time. Sometimes it will work, then others it wont. It stops working when I need it to work, inspection time.
working right:

Not working right: (very dim), hardly see it

So, I have priced them in the 300 dollar range, 245 on ebay. Pretty expensive, so I decided to try and find the problem. Took the light out trouble shooted, and found the problem, this thingamajig (D-1)

this is what i did, I put in a temp fix, gum wrapper. What ever that thing was, it was not letting power get to the other end, so I used gum wrapper to jump it. I know, not safe, but I only hold the brakes for 2-4 minutes, so wont get hot enough to burn, at least until I find out what it is and where I can get one to replace it, just a little soldering need.

Its been working for two days, no problems.

If anyone knows what that thingamajig is called and where I can get one from, please let me know. I am thinking its some kind of diode. Thanks in advance. Well the light works, spent no money. Just giving an update.

Looks like a diode take you meter and test it both ways(swap leads) should only read in one direction if it's a diode. If it's an diode you probably get one at radio shack and solder it in. The board says D1 so it's a diode.( missed that at first) Voltage should only flow in one direction.

It is definately a diode. It looks like it has a number on it. Any electronics store should be able to cross reference the number to their brand.

I would like to know where. I priced one at the local dealer, it was just a tad under $300 and that was with my military discount. I will just get the diode, resolder, and all is good. Ebay has one for $249. So, where is the 80 -100 dollar range one at?
