help with overheating

so right when i was getting off the highway after about a 3-4 hour drive, my engine coolant temp skyrockets and throws two codes, p1285 and p1299. i was driving at least 70 for most of the way back. right when it started i pulled over, turned it off, cleared the codes, waited for about 30-45 minutes, and started it back up and drove it back to my apartment with no problems. got back in it today and drove around for about 15-20 and it drove normally with no problems. what could have caused it to overheat like that?

Sticky thermostat, (do you have an electric water pump?) (Do you have an electric Fan?)

If you have the electric fan, it could be the engine sensor, or the fan activation solenoid..

When was the last time you flushed the Radiator fluid (you might have blockage)?

Low fluid would also cause overheating.

Defective water pump, a leaking water pump, or belt slipping, is getting wet by the pump.

And lastly but not common, the fan clutch, check it when the engine is cold it should spin freely, then check it when the engine is hot and it should feel more firmly (harder to turn) the metallic strip in the fan clutch should have expanded, and increased drag..

Off the wall possibilities, road side debris, such as paper or plastic blocking the front of the radiator, blocking air flow… Do you have those love bugs in you’re area, if so you’re radiator might be full of all those critters.
