Martyr,
"My first test drive of the L was just orgasmic though...that supercharger moaning plus the smooth tight ride and the ungodly torque was as close as you can get to having sex with a vehicle."

just have to throw my 2 cents in cuz i found a link to this on another board
firehawk222 put everything pretty clearly i believe... and remeber people we are not talking about a fireBIRD but a fireHAWK. there is a difference. see www.slpeng.com for details...
anyway, i just wanted to defend GM's rep in the aspect that "martyr" was talking about. ok i work at a GM dealership in the service department and you wouldn't believe all the idiots i see that come in with complaints but have no idea that they don't know how to take care of a vehicle. martyr said his ttops leaked... well most people's do. you know why??? because they don't know that they are supposed to treat them with silicone lubricant EVERY 6 months. and they come in all dumbfounded as too why the poor 5 year old car isn't water tight... well let's see... that much torque + dry-a** weatherstripping = LEAKS!
second, that sucks that you only got a 13.4 out of an LS1???? dag i seen a BONE stock 30th T/A run 12.9@108 with a paper air filter and some borrowed drag radials. but this dude for sure knows how to drive stick. i'm still getting there myself... but my point is these cars are capable of so much... if you want b*lls-to-the-wall power and handling go with the F-body.
if you want a cool truck with a good bit of get up and go, get the L. i like the lightnings, i really do. but i'm just not really a truck person... and what's up with the new ricey taillights? not crazy about those at all. but otherwise they are cool. i know it comes with a blower and that's easy to upgrade but i know a couple of camaros and T/A's that run 9.5 naturally aspirated. now granted that's with heads/cam/stroker and stuff but man i can't wait to get one to run like that.
visit http://www.rapidmotorsports.com/427%20CI%20Build.htm for a cool video of a 9 second T/A.

You come to this board asking what we would choose between, a Lightning or a T/A. I don't think you are surprised by the answers. If you want a plastic, cheap looking, interior with a great motor, with room for four(two adults/2 real small kids) go for the T/A. I bought a new T/A in 82, and it was a fun car. If you want something thats faster than MOST vehicles on the road and can haul/pull your daily needs, I BELIEVE YOU KNOW THE ANSWER

I don't know much about what the lightning looks like or rides like, but like SXC said I'm not a truck person.
I'm sorry I just found this, you say our interior looks cheap???

I'm a newbie here, but I"ll give a little correct information. My 3 F-bodies ('96,'98&'00) have all gotten around 21 MPG combined with upto 25-26MPG on the highway. I've not had a single major problem. This includes more than a bit of competition driving.
As for straight line, I've only had 2 Ls give the current ride a go. I'm 2-0. To take that one step further, I'd sure like to see the brick wall aerodynamics of the L at 150MPH+.
Now I only have about 25 years in SCCA competition. My log book is up to date and good for Solo II now. There is a new 1.8 mile road course that has just opened up about 30 miles from my house. PCA has an event coming up soon. I've been beat before. E-mail me if you want to give the Hawk a go with an L on the road course.
BTW - If I need to haul a sofa, I'll do it in my Chevy truck. That's my daily driver.

there is one simple fact. the firehawk looks squirrly. plain and simple. its over done and boy racer. thats why those cars are being pushed out. they simply dont appeal. the lightning is a totally classic look. it simply is a great looking vehicle, be it truck or car. people look at it with admiration, period. its also an interesting vehicle. like nothing else really. its also wonderful to live with on a daily basis. i have had tons and tons of high performance cars over the years, from hemis, to 427s, 440 six packs, etc. nothing even compares to the build quality and the pleasure of owning a lightning. firebirds are squirrly plain and simple.
Well.....I own a 2001 T/A Firehawk and all has been sweet. I'm interested in why someone would choose a performance truck over a performance muscle car...not to mention the king of muscle cars. Not to bash Fords (in the forum...I do it every day on the streets) but the Firehawk has a lot of power and tons of potential. My Hawk is pushing out some serious RWHP and I just recently ran a 12.07 in the 1/4. Not too bad eh? As for that dude who says you will see us Firehawks in the rearview mirror....
He's right...however, I'm sure that I'd already have done a few laps on him.

Now, there is an astute Ford guy! Where indeed?
We aren't being hostile just added a tad of opposing points of view.
I've driven the Lightning and I have to admit it is quick but it is a quick truck not a quick sportscar. Knocking the lines of the f-bodies and saying the L is a classic lined truck is slightly close to a crock of crap. Truck, truck, truck. Get that set in your mind and we have a bingo. Good looking, yes but it's a real shame for Ford to have the quickest vehicle in the fleet to be a truck. Arrrrrrgh!
If anyone is in my area, I'll meet you and we can compare notes. I like your vehicle but it is not a sportscar, nor does it compare to a sportscar's looks. I got you on the sportscar look stuff, you win on truck.

Well, since you read my initial post, you can answer your own question. Also, what kind of analogy is that? It makes no sense in any way, shape, or form. Whichever I choose will most likely be my main driver as my current daily driver, a 2000 Infiniti QX4 SUV is being traded in on it.
I like both the L and the Firehawk equally, especially at the price they are offered at. My QX4 is nice in terms of quality, but it has under 200hp, next to no rear storage, and can barely seat 3 people comfortably in the backseat. On top of all this, it gets under 15mpg and is more expensive than both the L and the Firehawk.
Whichever I choose, it will be my daly driver, since the QX4 currently occupies that spot. The Firehawk appeals to me in the same ways the Z06 did, looks, speed, power, handling, black leather interior, etc. The Lightning...can't say enough about it. Looks (IMO), speed, power, sleeper factor, utility, and more. I was never a truck person before discovering te Lightning, but if any truck can catch my eye, it is definately the L.
Edit: As of now I'm still undecided but once again, thanks for all the helpful responses. From both the Firehawk and L owners.

I use to own all GM products until I saw the Lightning. I had an 86 Z28 and then a 90 IROC-Z with the 5.7 engine. The one thing I really like about my lightning is that there is nothing out there close to what it is. There is no V-6 Lightning, no Lincoln Lightning or Mercury Lightning.(Camero, Trans am, pretty much the same car different body) I thought about the Z but there is not another alternative to the L.
A pedantic semantic rant thread!
Excellent.
I will now toss in .02 on the nomenclature front, since I appear to have some pennies...
Porsche 911 - Sportscar
Lightning - SportTruck?
CamBirds, Mustangs - Ponycar
All are 'sporting vehicles' and 'peppy' and 'fun to drive' and whatever else you want to add about your chosen ride.
I believe the original question was WRT a purchase choice between some kind of FireThing and the Lightning. The Lightning is a well engineered, peppy, truck. In some cases, very peppy. The FireThings are very peppy cars, and I'm sure they're well done as well.
Drive them both, buy the one that appeals more to you?

L owners consider themselves connoisseurs while Firehawk owners are simply car enthusiasts. Nothing wrong with a Firehawk but you just can't compare it to an "L". You won't get half as many stares in a Firehawk as you do an "L". Trust me on that statement! The stares while driving an "L" are totally unbelievable. That's what its all about guys....
To all the Firehawk guys coming over from other boards.... LEAVE
There is no reason for you to be here. The Kid does not own a Lightning or a Firehawk. He came to a LIGHTNING message board and asked questions about the LIGHTNING. Try reading his post sometime. He's asking Lightning owners to compare these two cars. What do you expect them to say? You guys admit that you don't know much about the Lightnings, only that you have seen them in your rear veiw mirror. So your posts are meaningless. You guys even argue with Lightning owners who have owned Firehawks! Do you have any idea how stupid you look right now? I'm sure the Kid knows stock for stock a Firehawk is faster, nobody is disputing that. You don't need to come over here and flex your muscles. When the Kid wants your opinions, I'm sure he'll go over to LS1.com.
