Wink Calling Baby Jake

Hi Mark,

I received a set of drop shackles while I was on my last trip. Maybe you could help me with the install, while both Jerry and Jim supervised, and handed us refreshments??

Think Beer...Beer...Beer...Beer

Cool

Hi Brooks,

And I bet that you would drive all the way to the Quad Cities if there was enough beer ...I mean to help an old man

Aren't those southern Lightning drivers tops

But, hey, your welcome to help I will order an extra keg if you are coming

LOL!

a tip: wear rubber gloves and a disposable shirt when you lower your truck.. that black gunk on the frame is a bitch to get off of yourself.

holler at me if you need any other tips..

ok ok Speedy is thirsty....

Dwight,

Absolutely positively MUST do when performing this task....change only one side at a time. Also, use your body weight to keep tension on the leaf springs when swapping shackles. I used mine, albeit light..you'll get the idea when your under there.

Install time: Hour-and-a-half...tops

Consider this advice repayment for the post-race MGD's you so graciously provided during WFC4...

uhm.. bob.. bad idea. you could end up chopping/smashing a finger.

to swap the shackles:
jack whole truck up & secure with jackstands on frame.
then jack the body of the truck up.
(i jacked up on my trailer hitch to do this)
doing this relieves the pressure on the suspension.
you will be able to remove the bolts on the shackles without the fear of them springing up & putting a dent in your bed. (or body part)

you are dead on the install time tho.. 1.5 hours with cleanup time & time spent crawling around under the truck to look at stuff.

any word from photos to go?

Red face

Brooks,

indeed I did leave out the "jack whole truck up & secure with jackstands on frame" out. I assumed (Doh!) it was a given since this is/was suspension work.

Therefore, let me clarify...

When I did my shackle swap, I secured the truck on jackstands under the frame as you stated above. However, I did it so the rear wheels were just off the garage floor, thereby relieving the tension on the leaf springs. Then used a floor jack under the pumpkin to support the axle when removing the OEM units. Body weight was used for minor adjustments to position the bolts.

Still only did one at a time...

Check your inbox regarding question.

no problemo bob.. you would be surprised what these guys on here will try to do after you get a few beers in them. LOL
i just wanted people to know there were more steps to it than just holding onto the leaf springs.. LOL ouch!

Hello Brooks, and Bob,

Gosh...thanks for all the warnings...I thought that since I was a bit LARGER than you guys, I could lay in the bed (of the truck), and skinny Mark (Baby Jake), could wiggle under and pull the bolts Then it becomes easier, with each progressive refreshment consumed ....or did I miss some important parts It is always so wonderful to have such helpful friends

Jim, Jerry and Mark....please give me a call (on my cell) or email tomorrow as to time and place to meet for the "shop class" on coolers, traction bars and shackles...there is no end to the fun It looks like rain, shop and beer for the weekend

...Dwight...

Hi all,

First of all, anytime for the shackles install is fine, and refreshments of course. I did not use jackstands when installing my shackles, I just jacked up the frame enough to releive the pressure on the leaf springs with the rear wheels on the ground. Piece-of-cake, install time will be 40 min. [including clean-up and refreshments].

[Dwight, I'll give you a call on your cell later this morning].

Jake...

Looks like I miss out on free beer again!
I UN-lowered my truck this week as I will be pulling a heavy load quite a ways this weekend. Took me about 1/2 an hour after I re-installed the hitch (which I also need now)and used it to jack up the truck. Hope you guys have a good time, and drink my share for me. I'll update you when I get back.

J Man,
If you would like to stop by I'd be glad to help with the power cooler. LMK

Lightning Bob,
Your share, and then some, will go quickly.
When are you headed out?
