Screw Flex-a-Lite!
Screw Flex-a-Lite!
Well living in New Orleans i evacuated for the hurricane coming. Along the way i start to see my water temp it higher and higher. So i pull over wiggle the VSC and the fans come on and the temp falls fast. Drive for about another 30 mins and same thing. This happen 8 times i had to wiggle the wires. Finally it wouldnt even work at all, the tab that the wire slips onto came out the VSC, so i had to splice the wires together to have fans, the run all the time even with the truck off, so when i park the truck i gotta pop the hood and pull the fuse. This is BS.
This is the 6th VSC that i have had go bad. I am sick and F N tired of this ****. I think im going to email a nasty letter to FAL and see what they have to say cause there quality SUCKS @$$!!!!!

I would be willing to bet your wiring is the issue, especially if you have replaced 5 other units.
You have three options:
1. Solder the connections to prevent heat build-up;
2. Use the VSC to switch a 40 amp relay to control the fans;
3. Buy a SPAL controller and replace the FAL VSC;
The fans draw so much current that a less-than-perfect connection generates heat which ends up destroying the VSC, fuse holders, etc.
I have the same VSC that came with my fan. It was installed on my '01 SuperCrew and then I moved it to my '04 Lightning. It is 7 years old now and still works like a champ.
Good luck and take care while Gustav wreaks his havoc...

Exactly - The connectors that come with it must be crimped and installed perfectly for it to work correctly.
The spade lug set-up on the controller offers too small a connection area for the heavy current drawn by the fans, IMHO.
If you clean the spade lugs and connectors real well, coat both with liquid flux, use a large soldering iron and solder the connections, you won't have another issue.
Otherwise, the relay or SPAL controller is your best option. The SPAL controller gives you a pigtail harness that is easy to connect to, greatly reducing the chance of a poor connection.
On another note, since you are posting, is it safe to assume Gustav hasn't been too bad for you so far ??

I have had the connector come out on a controller but I was able to glue it back in. Controller worked fine after that for awhile and I had to replace it but I have had Flex fans for bout 4 years and just got a second controller this year.
I've had only a slight issue with mine, one tab broke off so it was soldered back on and works fine. That bieng one issue as well as a connector that fried. Now, all new crimped connectors with proper heatshrink and dielectric grease = no problems. I have heard nothing but good from the SPAL unit though, if mine dies, I'll get one.
