Question Towing with the L

How much have people towed with the L? Does the standard mods, i.e. chip, filter, pulley effect the towing compacity?

It'll ping with a moderate to aggressive chip.

Though Superchips make a "tow" program - it's half way between stock and their R9 street program.

I'm hearing you say that these badboy chips are great for street/strip, but, don't try to drive around with a bunch of weight in or behind your L...is that correct? Is this a case for a 4-way chip??? Where you `select' the proper mode that would accomodate a load of barkdust driving up a hill in a headwind???

Still driving the stone-stock, silver 2001.

With PSP's 4-way flip chip, Program A is "stock." If I tow anything, I simply flip to program A and tow away. With my 2000 L, I regularly towed a friends boat -(@ 28 feet in length, not sure of the weight) with no detonation.

Cool

Well, I wouldn't exactly characterize it as a "monster", but my best guess is that the all-up towing weight is about 6500 lbs. No pinging with my Swanson chip at all, but I must emphasize that I would not try it without my helper springs. See http://www.activesuspension.com/ Imo the best thing I ever added to my truck, and a must for those who tow any substantial load. Not all that expensive, either. And I am not a paid shill, and I don't even get a commission.

How much do those spring kits go for. Does this kit only improve hauling charactaristics; or does it also increase load capabilities.

BadBolt, I paid $215 for my kit. Make sure you get the right kit, though, I believe its the one for the f250 not the f150, but you should check with them to make sure. It does not increase the load capacity, but it allows you to utilize the capacity built into the L.
I think it also helps prevent axle wrap at the strip and keep the wheels planted on the ground. I paid to have mine installed, but it looked pretty easy for anyone with a little mechanical ability. Best investment I ever made in this truck.

I'm towing a 14ft enclosed with a weight of around 3000lbs at 70-75 on the freeway. Aside from the trailer being a brick and L getting 10 mpg, it's great.

ccie6872,

I pumped the tires up to 36#. That's all.

Tongue weight pushed the rear down a coupla' inches.

SVT told me that the 5,000-lb tow limit was calculated by the 15%-of-trailer-weight-on-the-tongue rule and by the L's 800-lb payload. The payload is lower than a comparable F-150 because (1) the 5-leaf springs are intended to reduce axle wind-up more than carry weight, and (2) the Eagle F1-GS tires are decidedly NOT truck tires and cannot carry loads that truck tires laugh off.

I probably had 500-600 lbs on the tongue. I towed from the San Fancisco Peninsula to Laguna Seca (200-mile round trip). When I make a habit of towing I'll invest in a spring kit.

I have found that the L does not realy mind trailer weight but is not real fond of toung weight. I tow a few times a week from jetski's to a 21 ft Bayliner to racecars to car haulers with dead cars and trucks in them. No problem

Hope this helps
