Post Is this piston slap?

Excuse my ignorance, but at about 1600-1700 rpms with little load I get a "flutter" sound from the engine, and I'll be darned if I can figure it out, sounds alomost like valve float, but it's hard to describe, anyone else got this?

Thanks,

Gregg

Well, of all things, that's one that I'm pretty sure it's not.

Question

Well....what exactly IS piston slap? I have read alot about it here, but I have yet to see a description of it. I have 48,000 miles on my 5.4 and I haven't heard anything funky from the engine.

Piston Slap usually happens when you first start the truck and for a few minutes after. It sounds like something tapping in your motor.

Does your flutter happen at WOT?
If you have a chip, did you try taking it out?

Like 99svtlightning said, it sounds like a tapping. Kindof like a wood pecker in your engine.

My truck was doing the same thing yesterday and the only things I can think of are the fuel filter clogged or bad coil pack... I have had a bad coil pack and it kinda feels like it but the shaking at low throttle makes me think it's fuel related... Yesterday was the first time I felt this because I was sitting in traffic due to a accident that closed down 355 and as I was creeping up I could feel the shaking or fluttering...

Later, Justin

Of all people, I'd figure that you'd know what this was.

Like a little person inside your motor with a little hammer go at it!

I'm starting to get it now, and it pisses me off so much that I'm going to just rebuild the motor with some custom made pistons and rods. Hope fully that will solve that problem.

I heards its caused by the pistons being kinda sloppy in the motor. to much clearence inbetween the wall. I can see that happening.

Sounds like I caught the slap. I get that knocking at startup.

So, is there a cure? Short of a rebuild, what have people done about it? I saw someone is getting a new engine. But, are we sure its because of the slap? Has Ford acknowledged it as a problem?

Okay, I'm taking a real beating (well deserved, I guess) on the '01 accumulators, but the test units are out and I'll know in a few days, I think it's fixed, and if it is, Sal will have them in two weeks. Be patient, I don't think I can handle the stress I went through when the old '01s started fritzing out, you have no idea how much that shook me up, so I wanna be real sure I have it fixed before I start sending them out again.

Thanks,

G
