Wink Drag strip 102...

We get there, and Brian is telling me about Lightning on a Diet 101. I barely get parked and he's already getting under the truck twisting bolts. That was completly uncalled for Brian .

Rear hitch
weight of hitch: 55lbs
number of bolts: 8, all size 18mm.
time required: 10 minutes max.

Spare tire
weight: 45 lbs
mis notes: the support cord is greasy.
time required: 5 mins

Now for the main class:

Burnouts and pre-stage.

Everytime I was in the staging lanes, Brian gave me some pointers that he learned from Jim, Johnny Lightning, and others from the far east. We tried everything.

Inital Burnout:

Stay in one spot. I take it up to 3000-3500, let off the gas, and keep the brake on. The way Brian was saying it, the spinning tires heat up, and stay with the heating up burnout area. I used to always do the roll out, but this cools the tires down.

Then on the idle run to the pre stage light, I put her in neutral and gave it a nice rev, as per his suggestion to give it just a little gas. He told me Jim@JDM tested air inlet temps and this resulted in a 20* colder temps. These 2 little tricks enabled me to get 13.3@102+ passes back to back. A second bonus to the rev, it kinda throws the other guy off, a head-game so to speak.

Did I forget anything?

Tundra,

Nice runs, wish you could of run with the tire and hitch on first, just to see what difference it made. Hope to meet you up there some sunday, maybe in July. What did they do to your A/C, mine sucks too.

Tundra,

You did good.. Thats for sure.....It took me about 6 months to get low 13's. Of course back in those days, the chips weren't quite what they were today.

Shorty is right...BEER.....

Post your best timeslip.......

All I can say is 13.3's with a 2.x 60' and F1's is pretty decent...

The most important thing: Avoid the Waterbox with F1's!! Spinning isn't winning

I dropped the camera off to be developed last night. It is supposed to come back on weds night. So hopefully I will have pics by the weekend.

I wam going to be busting A around the house this weekend. Gotta get those "Honey Do's" done quick...

Later

Shorty,

Do you have a Red L? I just got back from Virginia Beach last Thursday and seen a Red Lightning crusing the strip there a couple of times.

Talking

Hey everyone, good to be back. I'm in Germany now and plan to take the L on the autobaun this weekend!!
Maybe I am missing something, but every person that I have ever talked to has told me that burn-outs on radial tires are a waste of time, tire, and money.

I have always been told that radials do not get "sticky" like slicks do, because they are made of a different type of rubber. Slicks are made specifically for burn-outs and get "sticky" with burnouts. Radials are built for every-day driving and as such, the rubber is designed to not get sticky, otherwise, your mileage per tire would go way down.

I think Tundra's recommended style of drag racing may have some merit with slicks (don't know, never tried it with slicks) but I am fairly certain that burn-outs with radials will not do ANY good on radials.

Good advice, but I would recommend a roll-out.
The proper spot for a burnout would be right at the edge of the water. You will know when your tires are "grabbing" or not, and when to "roll-out" of the box to clear those tires off of any debris. IMO

Everyone,

Some clarification about Tundras "Burnout":

1) He is on F1's
2) He avoided the water box
3) He backed up onto the rubber patch
4) He did a quick clean the tires off spin of about 3-5 secs..varying...

He DID NOT do:

1) A giant smokey burnout for 20 seconds or anything similar.

2) His track has no VHT or anything applied, so we experimented and came up with a good recipe of launch RPM's and technique that seemed best suited to his track..(Based upon 60' times)...

I agree that had he used MT's, then things would have been way different....

Thanks
