Without getting into specifics, I think I can answer those questions. There are two banks of data that store memory in the PCM. One bank chip maker are allowed to modify. The other bank, they are not. The reason for this is not the data stored in it, but in order for a chip to work, it must have a program that makes it work with the PCM. By federal law, chip makers are not allowed to "distribute" the program that allows acces to that bank. So for each PCM, tuners have access to only one bank of data. Usually all the good stuff is in there. There are only few Ford PCMs that have useful tuning data in the other bank. One example is the 96-97 Cobra. Injector size and fan control is in the other bank. That's why you can't get a chip of any make to control those items.

As for the adaptive tables, for those who wish to not have that function enabled, chips can be programmed to run in full time open loop. Most Autologic tuners who do Mustangs that are more strip than street, use full time open loop programs. It gives the tuner more control over the car, by not having the PCM "think" as much .

Question Question for the tuners

The way I understand the computer on a Lightning, there are three seperate types of tables on the stock computer.

1) the "perminenet" that the tuners are not suposed to mess with

2) the adjustable tables that the tuners are allowed to mess with (somthing like 100 of them)

3) the tables that the computer buildes on the fly that adjusts to two earlier table types depending on detonation, altitude, temp, fuel grade and all sorts of other things that change quite a bit for the first 300 miles or so.

My question is would it be possible to write a program that downloads these type three tables and then have the tuners use this data to tune the perfect chip for your truck. In thery you could have table three to have zero adjustment at least at one temp and pressure. One problem is the drag racers never get anywhere near 300 miles to get the tables updated.

What do you guys think?

Andy
